LED Indicator Dash Wiring Modification

As many of you may have found out, we cannot simply remove the stock bulbs and replace them with LED indicators. The usual fix is to install load resistors in parallel with the LED’s. The problem stems from the fact that Aprilia elected to use a single turn indicator lamp. This bulb will tie the left and right circuits together and cause both indicators to flash. The following instructions will show an easy way to fix this problem. Minor electrical skills are a plus. I chose to solder all of my connections and used heat shrink tubing to protect any exposed wiring.

The following parts are required:
· 2 each IN4005 Diodes. Radio Shack p/n 276-1104 or Maplins
· 1 each Electronic LED Flasher Unit. I used p/n CF12ANL-01, purchased from Superbrightleds.com

Gain access to the rear connector of the instrument panel. You will need to remove the screen and dash cover at a minimum. I removed the headlight and upper cowling assembly to make things easier. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery before removing the 20-pin connector. Loosen the black zip ties and pull back the connector hood. Remove the black sheathing from the connector wire harness with a pair of scissors or equiv.

Locate the light blue (pin 16) and red (pin 17) wires. These wires will be cut, and the two diodes will be installed. Cut these wires approx. two inches back from the connector. Install the diodes on the ends that go into the harness, with the stripe end pointing away from the wire.

Wrap the opposite end of the diodes together and solder to the red wire that is sticking out of the connector (pin 17).

The light blue wire that is sticking out of the connector (pin 16) will be connected to the blue/green wire (pin 15). This will be the ground return for the indicator lamp.

Temporarily hook up the connector and reconnect the battery. It’s a good idea to test everything out before final assembly. If all is good, shrink down your heat shrink tubing.

I wrapped the wire harness back up using electrical tape. Re-secure the harness using the factory zip ties. I also used an extra one just to tidy things up. Note that I have also installed a HID headlight kit, so it may look different than yours.

Excellent Amb will try an sort Mon or Tues night once i procure the diodes from work lol. Also any easy fix to enable me to tie a switch into my healdlight so that I can turn it on/off as it's permantly on and it eats batteries.:roll

Right now this is really frustrating!!!!.........got the new relay through today and plugged it in resistors are intalled band ends pointing to the clocks from red to blue into red pin 15............... the remaining end of the blue 16 has been spliced into the blue green of 17!!
Turn the indy's on left and all i get is contant on left back and front!!! Dash light lit up and same when switching to the right right back and front indy lit and dash light on contant nothing flashes

I'm pullling my hair oot now just spent £15 on this relay and it don't work!!!!

Any1 got any suggestions??

Right this has been really baffling me I double checked & triple checked my connections!!!!
Still no joy indy's come on as they should with the dash light but just don't flash for f*cks sake!!!!!!!!! AAAAAArrrrggghhhhh............Ok so done some thinking and the relay I got has a different code on it to the one shown on this thread although it has the same 12v 0.02a-10a printed on it...........!!!!!

It was then I noticed the side pin on mine was opposite to the one shown on the thread................so went back to the garage and swapped the connections on the my flasher and VOILA!!:thumbup I'm fully LED'd up ................and the best thing is no current drain leavin ur indy's on..........

Hope this helps any1 tryin to do the same .....I must say although I was real pissed not bein able to go for my easter weekend break due to my own stupidity in starting this job and not having the right bits .....the satisfaction of fixing something urself adds a liittle light on the ruined holiday weekend :biggrin

Oh before any1 asks I could not find the relay from the original 'HOW TO' post so bought the 1 I pictured on ebay which is readily available ........so if you do buy remeber you will have to reverse the connections!!

Hope this helps any1 thinking of doing the same mod!! Go on they look the dogs cmpared to the original indy's on these older milles :nana
