Hi all,
Just wondering wher I can get a larger rear spring for my 03 milie (Sachs) ??? I recently set up the sag etc and iv had to wind the existing spring right down :( I'm 6ft4 and not very light Lol

Just doing the same with my 03 Mille, I spoke to K- tech and was advised based on my all up rider weight what spring to get, the Ohlins spring fits the Sachs and is cheaper, yes you heard that right cheaper than almost all other rear springs I looked at. The part number you need is 10-92 & spring strength. Mine is a 10-92 with 105 Nm strength.

Does that mean the spring is also longer or is it just stiffer ? Or both ?

i weigh 75 kg fully equipped and my (sachs shock) is almost fully wound to give 18 mm of sag, the front preload is at minimum (and the forks are 6 lines showing) showing 18 mm of sag. that's weird enough. the sag was measured with damping and rebound fully out. other than that damping and rebound work as they should, it took me about a week to get them spot-on. i'm thinking of going full-ohlins though...

Pleased this topic has been raised as i'm looking to replace my sachs shock spring as the paint is cracking on the spring and it is wound up fully!
I understand that it's not as easy as saying you weigh X and ride fast so you need this spring because linkages etc come into play but there must be a decent reference guide somewhere so that you can purchase a replacement spring to suit your weight??

Well I just took it on myself to phone up k-tech and spoke to a really helpful bloke who advised me that I need 100-105 nm spring the part number is 10-91 160 long shock spring advised that ohlins is the best option ( basically everythin that nickvtwin mentioned I'm 17 ish stone the spring is not longer it's just stiffer...

That's right stiffer but not longer.....careful ladies.

Very good service by k-tech simply described weight and bike use (track) then was asked where I live ad was given the number of a local stockist that had the spring on the shelf, ohlins spring for £55 plus vat, most others are 85 / 90.

There is a web site that you enter your details into and it will tell you the stiffness of spring you require, I will search it and post it, however a quick call o k-tech has same result using their experience.

Fitted new spring this evening... Took longer than expected, biggest problem was compressing the new spring enough to get the blue base plate back on. We had no spring compressing tool, we had to be inventive using a ratchet strap to compress whilst holding top and bottom with rope but it worked, just.
Setting suspension up Sat morning, initial feel was very different.

Springs get shorter!

Hi guys,

it is worth checking the spring free length. My Sachs spring on my 2000 Mille has sacked by a huge amount. With the adjusters backed fully right off the spring, the spring length measures 132mm in length. According to the book, the standard PRELOADED length is 147mm, so the free length must be probably 15 -20 mm more than this! Now, the good suspension book I have from Race Tech tells me that even though a spring has sacked (lost some of it's non compressed free length) the spring rate remains the same. So you can still set the correct sag amount and spring rate but you will have the adjusters way further down that you would have previously. The main thing to watch out for though is that you have a higher risk of the spring getting coil bound because of the reduced distance beween the coils. If tha thappens it's time for a new spring!

Used my new spring yesterday on track, and WOW what a difference a new spring makes that is set up ! This was at Snetterton , I know snetterton well so could compare easily, confidence was high because it was more controlled, not getting chucked out of the corner, even able to change my line to over take mid corner / exiting corner. Suspension and tyre pressures, biggest difference to an enjoyable fast and confident day on track.
