Knackered Generator

I suffered the ignominy of being Relayed back from Wales by the ever helpful AA the other weekend having suffered from a total failure of the charging system.

I've stuck the multimeter across the yellow wires on the infamous brown connector and found a grand total of around 14VAC between any two of the 3 wires, so am pretty certain I've a knackered generator.

My question is, how straightforward a job is it do remove it to get it sent off and re-wound ?

Any advice would be very welcome thanks people !

Is this 14v across the battery terminals too?

I know that's what the Ducati now produces across the battery after i changed the voltage reg/rec. which decided to give up the ghost on the Isle of Man a few weeks ago.

Loads of bits on ebay at the moment. Bearing in mind how thirsty these buggers are think of all the fuel you saved lol

No ... just under 12 across the battery terminals ... at idle and up to 4k ...

I wouldn't bother...I'd slam in a new one with a warranty for the cost difference.
Check out your rectifier/regulator also...if the alternators gone, it's almost certain the r/r will have **** the bed too.

I thought the new ones were horrendously expensive, and as is the way with Aprilia parts, difficult to get hold of ? A re-wind is around £120 and returned next day, from the people Grif recommended to me.

How do I check the R/R ?

So has anyone else replaced theirs and know the steps needed?

As far as I can tell I need to do the following:

Drain the oil
Remove the oil tank ?
Unplug the brown connector by the regulator/rectifier ?
Pull the lead through somehow ?
Remove the generator cover ?
Unbolt the generator ? Does it need any special tools ?

When it comes back, reverse the above process
How in he'll does the wire with the brown connector get back to the other side ?

Loads of questions, hopefully someone here has done it before and just tell me it's really easy :)

Tubby...do you have a manual? If not have a look on AF1..there are free manual downloads there....it's a piece of piss...
(just send me a tenner for the info )

Yeah, I have the manual thanks ... it's a good manual, but it doesn't explain how the bloody hell to get that sodding set of wires with the ******* brown connector fed through from the rectifier side back to the generator ... I've spent a good couple of hours trying to work out how to feed it through with absolutely NO luck whatsoever :-(

What were the initial symptoms? I'm having battery issues with keeping it charged and at idle there is an indicated 14 mugwhumples (Yeah I know, I have no idea when it comes to electricity). I thought that the dealer told me that 14 mugwhumples was a good thing?!

The first I was aware of was when it failed to start at a fuel stop while out on a run ... I'd done about 80 miles since we stopped for a cuppa, and all had been well then.
Couldn't bump start her, and it took a lot to get going with jump leads too. Once going, all seemed fine again, apart from a brief couple of miles of intermittent cut-out and re-start, then all fine for another 60 miles. Had to jump start again then, all OK for 30 miles or so, then the intermittent cut-out etc became constant cut-out and restart and it became totally unrideable.

I had no early symptoms of dodgy battery or anything like that, no difficulty starting, never had to put the battery on charge at all, but then I'd not left my bike for more than a week or so without riding it since I got her in February.

to feed the wiring thru the very small space between the v
unclip the white segment on the brown connector
take a small pin (straighten out a small split pin)
and release the tangs that are holding the spade connectors in to the brown connector
tape together the loose spades and feed thru
hey presto job done
and refit in the reverse order of removal
must have done 15 of these this year and its the only way to remove and refit them without cutting the block connector off and e soldering it up

oh yes and forgot to add the regulator rectifiers dong realy give problems on these 99.99999% reliable
stators on model year 2006 tuono and 2004 model rsv upwards loadsa problems

Where you working bud ?

Sounds somewhat reminiscent of mine when the stator went. And I heart Chas... that sounds like someone that knows his ****. Thanks for joining Charley and thanks for giving us neophytes and dilettantes some clear simple instructions.

answer to nob's question i work at the rocket centre as a workshop monkey
i think i did an estimate for you a few months ago
