Do i use DOT 4 or DOT 5 brake/clutch fluid :dunno

cheers for any replies :thumbup

Cos i just shat meself when i read dot 4 only i checked the handbook and it says dot 5 is also ok....:doug

DOT 4 only

Phew.... thank god for that as I have just used some DOT 4 that was sat on the shelf. I remembered there was something on here about DOT 5 but couldn't find it.

Cheers BB :thumbup panics over now :biggrin

I would use dot 5 on the rear brake but only if it was completely flushed first. Dot 4 and 5 dont mix well. Saying that I have a different back res to the normal one. If you are running with a standard set of brakes then stick with 4.

how old was the dot4 and was it open? Brake fluid attracts water.:thumbup

Not sure how old :dunno probably a couple of years.

5.1 for the front system only and dot4 for clutch and rear brake, don't use dot5

I'm going to buy some fresh fluid tomorrow now just to be on the safe side...5.1 front and 4 rear it is then :thumbup (why not 5.1 for both :confused)

5.1 is ok. It has got glycol (antifreeze) and can mix with dot 4. Dot 5 is silicone fluid and wont mix. I have it in my back brake but its not a standard setup. The book says dot 5.1 so I would go with a fresh bottle of that:thumbup

Ive got 5.1 all round. It seems OK to me and the back brake hasnt faded yet with the heat. How come no 5.1 in the rear???

5.1 in the rear and clutch affects rubbers/seals etc., according to an Aprilia bulletin on the rear brake it states use dot 4 ONLY in the rear system

Wouldn't it also affect the rubbers/seals in the front too :confused it's all very confusing :biggrin
