Fiat-Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo has undergone surgery to his right hand, after injuring it while riding on a motocross course near his home in Barcelona on Thursday. The injury will mean that Lorenzo will not participate in the next Sepang test, but he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the Qatar test in March.

Falling in a low-speed corner and landing poorly on his right hand, Lorenzo fractured his hand at the base of his first metacarpal, which resulted in him also dislocating his thumb. Taken immediately to the Capio Hospital General de Catalunya, Dr. Augusto J. Casanovas made an open reduction and osteosynthesis with a small titanium plate, the result of which will require Lorenzo to wear a hand protection for four to six weeks.

Lorenzo, like several other MotoGP riders, cross-trains roadracing with dirtbike riding, and isn’t the first rider to get themselves injured before a season’s start by tacking part in the dirt-based sport.

What a ****. I can't believe the teams let their riders anywhere near crossers. How many injure themselves ? Tonnes. Every year someones got a bad injury through off road bikes. Potty.
