Is Hayden Back?

Is Nicky Hayden back? The World Champion was third in Assen after a spirited run from the fifth row. Hayden ran strong in the early laps to climb up the leaderboard, then made another run late to cement third spot.

Hayden's title defense had been disappointing so far, with a best finish of 7th before last weekend. The general consensus was Nick was having a difficult time adjusting to the new 800cc MotoGP formula -- especially on the tiny machine some feel was designed with Pedrosa in mind.

But Honda and Michelin also have struggled. No Honda rider has won this year. Michelin has even been the brunt of criticism from Valentino Rossi, who reckoned that Bridgestone was the better tire so far in 2007.

Hayden, who entered the year with 20 career MotoGP podiums, hadn't sniffed the box in '07 before a post-Catalunya test last month. Nick received a revised RC212V frame that teammate Pedrosa had been using previously at the test and his lap times were much improved over those from the race weekend.

Nicky was quicker over the Donington weekend but crashed out of that race held in tricky conditions.

With Hayden and Pedrosa finishing third and fourth -- getting similar performance out of the bike -- that puts the onus back on the Honda/Michelin package. Once again, the Hondas finished behind Yamaha and Ducati. Hayden has stated his bike isn't getting the power down out of the corners as easily as some others. A new version of the Honda MotoGP bike has been rumored for Brno.

But what next? Hayden says he's now racing with a "nothing to lose" mentality. Nick and the rest of the MotoGP regulars will next race in Germany before the USGP. Nicky has won the Laguna Seca race the last two seasons.

I think it's obvious that the Honda teams have been struggling and it's not just Nicky. He obviously likes the new bike, so I'm hopeful these results will continue.

Nicky isn't the best rider on the grid, but he's a good kid with more than enough talent to hold his own if he's got the right bike under him, IMO.

I went to Mugello, Catalunya and Donington, I dont think Haydens improvements are enough now we are half way thru.
Go Stoner Go!!!

Obviously this season is pretty much wasted, that doesn't mean he can't improve enough to get back on the podium.

agree..his back mean his being competetive and on the podium again..

If you put Hayden on the Yamaka and Rossi on the Honda, Rossi would still win...but Hayden would still put up a good fight like he did at Assen

The commentator overdid it IMO, "this is the Hayden we want to see, riding like the champion that he is..."

Too little too late for Hayden and Honda

I'm sure he will get on a podium, if they let him have full control of the bike.
Its a shame it hasnt worked for him, he certainly aint alone with his troubles.

In the interview that CBS did with him for Assen TT he says directly that he is troubled because the lead designer/engineer told him the bike was not designed for him or his riding style. (I guess between the lines that means it is designed for Dani Pedrosa) I bet Hayden makes a move in the next season or so.

I thinkhonda will dump him before he moves himself. They love Pedrobot and no doubt they will gun for Jorge Lorenzo if Vale gets his way and dosent share the yam team with him

Pedrosa is Spanish, Repsol is Spanish where do you think the money comes from? Texaco? :laugh (How much money does Hayden bring to the team? :dunno)

Hayden should have started and stayed with a satelite team, not with the No1 team.

Very true, but that would not have helped MotoGP in the states at all, nor would it have helped Honda. Now just where on the earth does Honda sell literally boat loads of motorcycles and cars and outboard engines and lawn mowers, etc etc? I think it is about $$ first and talent second.

Nicky is going to have to alter his riding style to do any good. I don't think it's that Honda has designed a bike that doesn't suite his style, the class doesn't suite his style. The bike probably can't be designed for Nicky's riding style and be competitive, now they're 800cc machines and they're relying on faster corner speed. The guys who went through the ranks 125cc & 250cc that had to use corner speed will do better on the 800cc bikes more than ex superbike or dirt trackers that are used to sliding around etc.

Even if Honda gave him a bike that handled like he's used to or his style, he'd still be at the back of the pack because it just wouldn't cut it with the front runners. :dunno

Nicky needs to adapt to the new Honda, not a new Honda designed around him. There's lots of other riders out there on Honda's too. All with 800cc engines.

Of course you are right Steve. That is what I said, it is about $$$$ first and talent second. Nicky is not a MotoGP style rider, however he is a good rider and he sells Hondas in the States, just like young Casey (the former crasher) is selling Ducs in Australia. Casey did not have the talent last season, he crashed out of 50% of the races. Hayden finishes 80% of the races this year in 7th or later position, where the majority of Hondas are finishing. Anyway, I am not a Hayden fan, but I do know it is about $$$$ not talent.

They've pulled the Honda TV commercials they used to play here during the telecasts. "If you want to know what it's like to be a world champion like me, buy a Honda CBR600RR" NH is not selling anything here :laugh
