Is Nicky Hayden back? The World Champion was third in Assen after a spirited run from the fifth row. Hayden ran strong in the early laps to climb up the leaderboard, then made another run late to cement third spot.
Hayden's title defense had been disappointing so far, with a best finish of 7th before last weekend. The general consensus was Nick was having a difficult time adjusting to the new 800cc MotoGP formula -- especially on the tiny machine some feel was designed with Pedrosa in mind.
But Honda and Michelin also have struggled. No Honda rider has won this year. Michelin has even been the brunt of criticism from Valentino Rossi, who reckoned that Bridgestone was the better tire so far in 2007.
Hayden, who entered the year with 20 career MotoGP podiums, hadn't sniffed the box in '07 before a post-Catalunya test last month. Nick received a revised RC212V frame that teammate Pedrosa had been using previously at the test and his lap times were much improved over those from the race weekend.
Nicky was quicker over the Donington weekend but crashed out of that race held in tricky conditions.
With Hayden and Pedrosa finishing third and fourth -- getting similar performance out of the bike -- that puts the onus back on the Honda/Michelin package. Once again, the Hondas finished behind Yamaha and Ducati. Hayden has stated his bike isn't getting the power down out of the corners as easily as some others. A new version of the Honda MotoGP bike has been rumored for Brno.
But what next? Hayden says he's now racing with a "nothing to lose" mentality. Nick and the rest of the MotoGP regulars will next race in Germany before the USGP. Nicky has won the Laguna Seca race the last two seasons.
