Idle speed

Gents another question for you brain machines.

I have just serviced the beast which has prompted the question (2000 RSV).
Replaced K&N air filter, oil filter, replaced plugs with iridium. I now have an idle speed of about 1800rpm when hot, slightly lower when cold. Before the service i'm pretty sure the idle was lower 1500/1600 rpm. No running concern just interested to see if anybody has heard of this or can advise the correct idle speed when hot.

Probably saying something that most people here will already know, but the 04 - manual states Idle Speed as 1250 plus or minus 100 rpm if it helps at all. Not sure about when hot though.

Thanks for that, but this seems to have increased slightly. do iridium plugs make much difference to the v's. I also believe the 2004 have slightly different throttle bodies don't they?

Chances are your old air filter was blocked strangling the engine then!! :dunno

Have you not got an idle speed adjuster on the right side of the bike as your sat on it?

Hi Amb67 there is what I believe an idle screw. Can you just advise the idle speed. I would suspect about 1400/1450.

1250 rpm +/- 100 rpm :thumbup

Rsv's don't have an idle screw, only air bleed screws on the throttle boddies. Don't touch these. The idle speed is adjusted with a knurled adjuster, that's located just below the middle of tank on the right hand side of the bike

Hi Legs has the tank got to be lifted for access. Looking and reading around, 1800rpm doesn't seem to be far out.

Certianly on 2001 to 2003 models there's no need to lift the tank, it's easily accessible and visible, you can't miss it. Just noticed your bike is a 2000 model but it should be exactly the same. Only 2004 onwards RSVR and Factory have no idle adjustment

Not sure where you got 1800 rpm being not too far out from. This is way to high for idle. As the guys have said, around 1200 rpm is correct when warm

Mk1 RSVs (mine is a 2000) do have an easily accessible idle screw. It's on the right side of the bike (as you sit on it) next to the front side panel securing screw.

Gents once again your advice is spot on. Run her up this afternoon I have now set the idle to 1350/1400 when hot. If i set her lower she seems to vibrate a little. I left her for a couple of hours and tried her when cold no vbtration or chatter, so I think this is thie is the best setting at present. The screw is bang on right where you all said, so obvious not sure why I never spotted it before. Again thanks for all your help.

Great news Mike.

Seeing as your local (ish) to Tamworth might I suggest you take a trip over to Griff and get the throttle bodies and CO set up?

(Trust me it'll be the best £40 or so you ever spent)

just as curiosity what do most post 05 onwards riders see on idle speed ( rpm wise ) ?

He'll cast his eye over the whole bike and make sure it's spot on for you mate. :thumbup

Throttle, suspension, engine etc....
