Hugger Screws

B

Beanie

Anyone know any way i can get 2 broken screws out of my swinging arm with out taking it off and attempting to drill them out?:dunno

They,ve snpped off flush to the arm, and no, i didn't do it, it was like that when i bought her, just want to fit my carbon hugger and can't.

Me and trying to drill things out have not worked well in the past:rant

I had this happen to me over Christmas.

You need to drop the rear shock link and this allows the swing arm to drop down all the way.

You can then get access to drill the sheared bolts out and fit a wire thread insert in its place.

Be warned, when I drilled mine out the aluminium of the swing arm was crumbling, I think these arms are not the best quality.

Have fun and if you get stuck give us a shout.

just get the old heads and blu tac them on to the snapped bolts!!

or you could helicoil them

Beanie, that's Tim our resident engineering guru - not!!! LOL

Tim, a wire thread insert is a Helicoil.

He means well though, or is that he's well mean?

I had this happen over winter, tryin to remove the hugger. I used various size drill bits starting off small as poss (but they keep snappin) up to about 4.5mm, then tapped a new 5mm thread, bought some new screws..jobs a good un...:cheers

Drilling steel out of this aluminum is risky, especially when you don't have proper access. I would take it loose from the bike and do it on a bench. If you have never done this, save yourself some grief and take it to a machine shop. You may be happier if you do.

Tim you are a GENIUS !!!.......................I reckon Griff/Spoonz have some serious competition :eatcorn

P.S Are your building skills up to the same standards as your engineering skills :pirate:dunno
