how safe is your helmet

Every helmet goes thro a safety standard and should do its job at the rated impact, im not a logo or name man, in my opinion if your helmet fits properly and is comfy its far better than a name, ive had cheap helmets years ago and ive had expensive ones, they all passed the standard set for the shell, what i will say is that cheap helmets generally let air thro the visor and the padding and lining goes soft quick making it loose, the expensive ones dont let air in and stay tight on your head, im middle of the road pricewise with an AGV Stealth, i think its a great helmet, inside lasting well and holds head well at speed :thumbup:thumbup

I couldn't give a **** about a name when buyng a helmet, I want something that feels perfect on and will save my heaad when its bouncing down the road. I have spent hundreds on different helmets and there are 2 that I would also buy again. A Rossi Rep AGV, and a Shoei XR1000 Suzuki. Both seemed to be designed for my noddy shaped head. They feel perfect. The AGV is long gone, but the Shoei is still my lid of choice, with Aprilia stickers over the suzuki bits LOL:nana

last tie ic came off i had a ti-tech on ad it did its job fantastically

I've been through a few lids since being on a bike

nitro , shark , ogk , takachi , RM and sparxs

thankfully they have all done there job well as im still walking , talking and acting like a normal person . as bad as it sounds all my lids have been crashed at fairly high speeds or with a heavy impact .

like everyone says dont matter what make it is either a nitro or a arai it will do the job as good as any lid out there as long as it fits right .

i was pretty shocked at the results as well. i'll be curious to see what happens after this release. I've got an Arai Quantum that is almost due to be replaced (probably at the end of this season, or my next crash...whatever happens first :laugh). I don't know if I want to shell out the crazy amount of money for another Arai. I like the AGV's and Veemars. This test will certainly be in my mind, I don't think it will be the deciding factor though.

Currently mid market Bell Daytona.Brill fit,comfort.On my tourers,BMW flip,loose fit,went to low end CabergTrip,brill fit,comfort,fitted out for Autocm ,earpieces,sun visor.AWESOME,DOES PRICE MATTER!!?

many sub £100 lids offer the same materials internally as the top priced brands so to still asume they are all inferior in some way Is a way of justifying that extra spend.Think about this...How much does It cost to put a rider in a certain make of helmet(rossi commands 2 million for his)where do you think that money comes from ,It goes onto the price that we all buy at ,thus making It substantially more than the production really Is.
Just a thought...

on the other hand by buying something that well established riders are wearing, you are taking there professional judgement and opinion as a resource, if they are willing to wear the lid and ride at 200mph then you can assume its safe for its job

or so we thought

thats what i assumed to,i know the racers make money from the helmets, but surely they wouldnt risk a crap unsafe helmet for money?
the tt has to be one of the most dangerous places to ride and the majority of lids are arai followed by shoei?!

Do you think the pros wear standard gear, i think not. All their equipment is custom hand made and hand finished. Not straight off the peg. same with leathers, if you think you are wearing the same leathers as the racers, think again. There equipment is all one off superior equipment.

top level pro's yes i agree, but not IOM racers
custom leathers from crowtree yes of course but no privateer racer round IOM gets Aria to make a specific helmet for himself

plus all technology is passed down eventually so yes i believe that Ti-Tech is based on something similar to what rossi wears

well said agreat1,fully agree mate!
i have a shoei and an hjc, both good helmets, both worlds apart in price.
the hjc is a damn fine helmet, specialy for the price,i use it as a spare, but the finish and quality is miles apart from the shoei and the hjc is at least 5 years newer.
you get what you pay for, same with leathers ect,you can ge a set of 1 piece leathers for £125-179,a far cry from a new set of dianese/alpines,buti know which id rather slide along the road in.
each to there, ill stick to what i THINK is top quality equipment.
ill get the best i can afford,if i could id have the top of the range arai, shoei or agv.

my comment was not about buying cheap, i too agree it's quality not price that gets my vote. however there are lots of people about that think that the race rep paint job helmet they just paid £400 for, or the latest replica alpine race suit they paid £900 pound for, have come out of the same batch as the said MotoGP or WSB racer gets his from. this is not the case. Crowtree(who sadly are no longer making leathers), BKS, ZAK leathers, all make bispoke made to measure quality bike wear. you only have to look and talk to these people to understand what constitutes a proper set of leathers, and its not what you buy of the shelf. thats not to say that there aren't some good stuff about of the peg. but it has nothing to do with name, and everything to do with how they are made. you don't always get what you pay for, and you don't always get what you think you are getting.

if you buy a race rep they are £100 pounds dearer just for the paint job take the shoei xr1000 kagayama it was £350 you can buy the same helmet without the kagayama paint job for £100 less! i tried a arai rx7 and it fitted perfect £ 499 for the haga rep witch is one of the best looking helmets out there.arai put there helmets through 6 or 7 cant remember tests but officialy they only have to do 5 also shoei are 6 yrs ahead in reasearch construction .talking to shoei rep at bike show told me the helmet worn by shinya was exactly the same as we buy apart from the head measurments so taking that inconsideration i will buy either arai or shoei or any other top brand xlite soumy ect

You hit the nail on the head when you said exactly the same except for the head measurements. top riders don't go down their local bike shop and just try on helmets until they find one that fits ok. their lids are custom made to exact measurements. its the perfect fit that is the key here. same with leathers they don't try a few and say that will do, near enough. their leathers are made to measure. in an accident a half decent lid or made to measure leathers will be far safer than a top of the range item that doesn't fit correctly. with regards leathers your enemy is numerous panels, in a spill the first thing that goes is the stitching. if you look at quality made to measure, they are almost only two large panels, one front and one rear, and all the flash panels are only cosmetic stitched over the top. most of the peg stuff are made up of lots of panels, these are not cosmetic but are structural. pro race leathers are virtually two suits in one. structural under suit for protection, and outer suit for graphics sponsorship etc. these are then stitched together.

as i posted on here a few weeks ago guy who sold me my mille has got sean emmetts leathers and when i looked at them they are like nothing i have seen in the shops they have almost a carbon weave apperance. and very soft leather .they realy do look different to off the peg stuff .

i've got aria condor helmet (st george)
wolf retro leathers (look very well made tones of armour, especially like the shin protection)
wolf gloves (my last rst set wore through in seconds when i slid down the road)
alpinestars boots (bit worn need replacing)

hopfully i never test my kit out again, but if i do i could e wearing worse
i could be riding round IOM in 50's in basically nowt
