I think the Vin number has some date coding in it if you can work it out. It can still be coded for 01 manufactuer date and be an 02 bike as the production run usually starts in September of the preceeding year.
Your right. You could have a 1985 bike that was registered in 2005 and it would show as a 2005 on the V5. I was generally taking the p*ss and not being very helpful. My swingarm is stamped on the date of manufacture (1999) but is on a 2000 model bike. I'm pretty sure spoonz is on to something with the VIN number as this will have been put on the bike when it was manufactured, not when it was registered....

hi guys the 10th digit if the frame number is the manufacturer date 4=2004, 2=2002, 1=2001, y=2000, x=1999, w=1998
hope this makes sense??
please be careful though as there are are few tricky bikes out there just like spoony himself says ....a few bikes like my own mille has a 2s frame number but its a 03 model because it was the press bike from 2003 so it was one of the first 03 models made in Scorze plant (just outside Noale) BTW The S in the frame number denotes at which plant the bike was made S scorze and N is Noale.....
