Although initial reports suggested that John Hopkins went relatively unscathed after his crash at the Nürburgring (video above),**Dr. Ting here in the United States has concluded upon further examination that Hopper had a small hemorrhage on his brain that has since stopped bleeding. The discovery of this injury is a show-stopper for Hopkins, who has been plagued with adversity this past year.
Diagnosed with only*a slight concussion and bruises to his shoulder and wrist by Clinica Mobile,*Hopkins was released from doctor’s custody while in Germany, and many thought he would be racing at WSBK’s next stop in Imola at the end of this month.
Since that time, Hopkins has undergone three surgeries to repair his ligaments in his left shoulder and hip, and his scaphoid and a bone separation in his right wrist, which needed to be fused in order to heal.
Dr. Ting wants to observe Hopkins’ recovery over the next 6 weeks, which will effectively end his season. Stiggy Honda has no plans to replace Hopper’s ride on the team for the next three venues, which shows support for Hopper, but we can imagine this will create some difficultly in their contract negotiations for next year as Hopper hasn’t really had an opportunity to show his worth in WSBK.
Hopkins has released a message from his hotel room to all his fans talking about his injuries, and his intention to stay in motorcycle racing. He credits his gear to saving his life, and seems to be in good spirits.
We hope Hopper heals up well, and returns to motorcycle racing soon.
