Welcome to the forum.

Listen out for metallic graunching sounds when starting, it should start at the push of the button, if it doesn't then it may have not been looked after.

Look at the way the seller starts it, should always be started with no throttle at all. If they use the throttle then they may have caused damage to the sprag clutch assembly.

Look for damage to the wheels, the wheels on the R models are expensive to replace let alone hard to find.

Make sure you can verify the mileage from old MOT's, the clocks on certain models do have a habit of resetting to zero every now and again.

Try and find one where the owner has cared for it, you'll spot it straight away as they'll have **** loads of history for you.

Good luck on your hunt, plenty of good examples around.

Welcome mate - next county to you but work in Hants - where are you? 2001 is a good choice - check normal stuff plus starting is the main thing, as AMB says. If you hear a graunching when you start it then it'll be the sprag on the way out - budget a couple of hundred if you're handy with the spanners but knock them down by more than that as getting it done by a dealer is quite pricey.
Remember to check the oil when it's hot - best if you can whip off the side covers when you go to see it - check the LHS for any oil around the tank and in the belly pan - they are usually pretty oil tight but the tanks can crack (people say).
Check all the electrics work OK and look for dinks on the swing arm and on the frame behind the brake and gear levers.
If you need any more help, give a shout - there's always someone on here who will know:thumbup
PS. You'll find you only get tingly fingers on a Mille if you ride it slow!
