Hello,

FIRST day owning the 2003 RSV mille, bought it with 1500 original miles!. I was unaware of the parking lights, and accidentally ran battery down. Attempted to jump (i think i did it wrong (used car battery, car not running,) but connected neg-neg). The jump did not work. I bought a new battery, charged it, (also charged dead battery). Attempting to start but engine will not turn over. Attempted to start many times.......

I think it could be the starter switch (ordered the yamaha one) or maybe the spark plugs flooded? please help.....

Exactly what happens when you press the starter button? Maybe any EFI errors on the dash?

If the engine is turning and it doesnt want to start, check that the kill switch is off and that the bike is not in first gear (it does happen, a lot :D).

And try to start it with the cold lever to the max, but dont touch the throttle.

If you checked everthing and it wont start, dont force it to much because you will destroy the sprag clutch and it wil cost you to replace it.

Hi there,
First thing don't stress! I DID!
Picked up my03 millie couple of weeks ago, rode it home fine.
Left it in the garage overnight, went down the following morning turned over but would not start, smelt of petrol.
Used the forum, loads of good info on here.
Because the bike was a 03 with 7k miles on it I thought all would be good, wasn't though!
BTW did not try to start her again until I did the following:
Decided new as specifyed on here Yuasa ytx14sbs battery, new yamaha starter solenoid, new oil 15/50 semi synthetic and filter and new plugs.
Starting procedure, cold start fully on and hit the starter button, BOOM fired up sweet as nut. the bike is kept on optimate now, starts first time every time. For the first couple of times I rode it was always a bit on edge that I was going to have trouble starting her, but she has been fine. Use the forum these guys know thier stuff and will get it sorted for you.
Enjoy:thumbup

Regards
Martyn

No EFI errors. When i hit the start button, it cranks(or tires to) and it just wont catch. i will wit on the yamaha switch and i see its recommended the 14 sbs battery....i bought a 12 to replace the stock........ replace spark plugs too?

The big issue here apart from components is keeping the battery in tip-top condition (even if you use a standard 12 amp battery-I do) with an optimate; even in the summer. You also state the bike is an '03 with 1500 miles...has it been sitting in someone's garage for a significant period with same petrol in it-may have gone off - fresh petrol may be a good idea too!! Also, check kill switch as suggested and that it's not in gear........Also if it's been standing along time there may be issues with the side stand switch!!! It should be solveable, but try the obvious first!

SO.....No luck. I replaced the starter switch cylenoid, and still not start...it is cold out side ( but its florida only like upper 40's f)...so last think to try is see if my spark plugs are wet...(i did smell gas)...it keeps cranking but wont turn over. I have the throttle (switch on left handle bar) open when i try to start. also had new 12 v battery.

Hi mate

I had the same problem when i got mine a few weeks ago. The plugs are probably wet from all the cranking over. You need to be sure your new battery is fully charged at least 24hrs. I cleaned my plugs battery fully charged and away she went. Reading on here it seems that its a bit of a quirk with them just stay cool and you will get it running.

Hooray

Well i replaced the spark plugs....the old ones were reall wet....had just begun drying off....but i swapped them out, and she fired up after a good crank, and burned off al that raw gas.........so one more millie rider back on 2 wheels..........

thanks for all ou guys input.
