Help please! Charging problems

Hi,

Can someone please help me. I'm having trouble with the battery charging on my 2004 RSV1000R Factory (gen2).

I've checked the VAC across the 3 points going into the reg rec at 5000rpm as follows:

1-2 20V
1-3 20V
2-3 4V

I think there is a problem here.

When I put a fully charged battery in, (I've tried with 3 different batteries 2 of which are def in good condition) and the bike is idling, the voltage across the battery gradually drops going as low as 9V after about 20 mins and then cuts out. When the bike is then turned of the voltage will gradually rise up to 12V over about 20 mins, but this is not enough to restart the bike. When the bike is being reved the voltage will go up, but will drop straight back down when left to idle and continues to drop slowly.

The lead coming from the generator does not have a white connector on it, it is wired straight into the brown connector which plugs into the reg rec.

Any help with this will be much appreciated.

ISTR the voltage should be about 50-60vac across the yellow output wires from the stator at 4000rpm...
Your very low readings would indicate that your stator has fried.

Could it be the lead from the stator? I'm using the V~ on my voltmeter, I presume this is the correct setting to measure VAC.

Yes...take your readings across any of the yellows...y1 to y2, y2 to y3 etc...

It's unlikely to be the leads from the stator, if they were damaged, you wouldn't be getting any reading at all.

Sorry, but it looks like new stator time.

Just keep your fingers x'd that the reg/rec hasn't taken a dump also...

OK, got new stator eventually - Electrex, didn't want to risk another standard one! So I've gotta connect it to another set of wires as the lead isn't long enough. Does it matter in which order you connect the yellows together? Or are they interchangable? There is no obvious way in which they are ordered as they are all yellow obviously!

All the yellows are the same, doesn't matter which one goes where to the reg/rec...(just dont connect them together, y to y etc)

Electrex stator seems to be good. Let's hope it gives me a bit more life than the previous 2 standard ones!

Anyone had any issues with oil leaking from Electrex stator leads at alternator casing seal? Only fix I can think of is that lovely stuff known as instant gasket!
