Well, after 30 years of riding inlines I pulled the trigger on my first Vtwin, and WOW. thats all I can say. i LOVE this tuono!!
i do however have a couple issues I need help with, if it was an inline 4, i could figure it out. But not so sure on this thing.
1st. I get TERRIBLE gas mileage. its a 2004 and its in MINT, babied condition. i get roughly 100 miles a tank if i am lucky
2nd, Its blowing some smoke out the exhaust, not alot. but noticeable and people commented on it. (white/blue smoke)
3rd, its got LOTS of soot on the exhaust tip. that was not there when i first picked it up. (they cleaned it first i am sure)

Now when I got it, they put a new battery in it and reset EVERYTHING, so i dont know if thats something,

My first initial thoughts are that the bike is running super rich and needs to be tuned?
any and all help is immensely appreciated!

Oh, and Hello all!! I am happy to be here!

Welcome Ronin,
you must be riding fairly frugally if you can get that many miles out of a tank full, these things like a drop of juice & you will get used to worrying about you next fill up when out for a blast.

Not sure about the smoke, I would sttart at the basics, same with all engines.

Has it done many miles, can you do a compresion test, not wanting to worry you, but blue / white smoke suggests oil getting burnt.

If its smokey on start up, it suggests valve guides, if its there all the time, it suggests rings.

A bike running rich normally has a "petrolly" small about it.

its got 13k miles, has been immaculately maintained and stinks to high heaven of gas while riding and idling at lights. I havent done a compression test yet, but its hauls my fat butt around as if i weighed 150 pounds with no hesitation.
It doesnt smoke while under throttle, just while idling. (at least from what I have seen) its going to get the compression test most riki tik though

Was it serviced before you got it, could have too much oil in and is being burned off.
If it has the original can on, the previous owner may have had an after market on and had it chipped.
The gen 1 normally gets better economy than you are geting. Could also be a blocked air filter?

Get the throttle bodies balanced and the CO settings done with whatever exhaust pipe your going to run on the bike.
My '03 Tuoldo used to do 115 - 120 on a tank of gas with twin Akra system. Excess oil will get blown into the airbox,
Oil level should be checked with the oil hot and should be at the halfway point on the sight tube.

I went an added a power commander to it and what an amazing difference. Power output increased as well as my gas usage stabilized and the stink went away. But i have been told that I do not need a power commander on it, just a new map. True or untrue?

On a gen 2 (2006 ? Onwards) if you change cans then there is a 2nd map stored on the ecu that can be changed by an ape dealer. with a gen one then it involves changing the chip..
Did you sort out the blue smoke ?

ronin
mines an 04.......i havnt got a pc on mine its summert else to go ******...i can get 120 miles on a tank if i pootle around and as low as 90 miles if i screw the arse out of it...they are thursty buggers any how but that big tank dont hold much to start with
a good chip,a good exhaust ,and a sorted air filter will do the buisiness
what can are you using? what air filter is on it and has the airfilterbox been de restricted?
