Thought I'd go for the 190/55 for my spain trip in a couple of weeks,re fitted the wheel tonight to find that the tyre is 20mm larger diameter to the 180/55 I was running, both BT 016,problems Ive got is now the tyre is lightly scrubbing the hugger, which will only get worse with speed as it expands,my 16/44 gearing will be all to cock with that large a tyre & I had my bike running quite steep before with 5 rings on the forks & rear shock at max recommended length,Ive just ordered a 15t sproket wich should sort the gearing & the tyre rub problem & then raise the front end 1 ring to slow the steering a bit,has anyone else tried this size tyre & what setup /gearing did you end up with, wot with me going in a couple weeks Ive not got the time or money to sort it out ,any recommendations?

Cant you put some spacer washers in betwwen the hugger bolts and read swing arm as a temporary fix.??

in the worst case you could always take the hugger off until the tire is worn down enough or you come up with a long term solution?

wouldnt be ideal in rainy conditions but sunny spain should be ok id think

Im worried that the tyre will rub the swingarm aswell when it expands at speed,& side stand wise Im running the cbr 1000r with 10mm removed from the length

I have been using a 190/55 i found a 17/42 is best for me i've tried a few different gear combo's and could'nt get on with them. good luck

if you are running 10m of thread showing at the shock and 5 rings showing on forks your bike must be to front end loaded IMO and unstable as a road bike on bumpy stuff, regarding the tyre rub i think you will find the spindle right forward in the swingarm due to the larger rear sprocket, you could put an extra link in the chain to bring the spindle back in the swingarm.

Also the wheelbase will be shorter the way it is, personally i reckon the bike has too much front end weight combined with a shorter wheelbase, not a good road set up IMO (if that is what you are running)

Surely a larger diameter rear tyre will lower your gearing further, so if you fit a 15t front you are lowering it yet again, maybe try the 15 front with a 42 on the rear to allow the spindle to go back a bit

Hi Badger, the bike is still stable with that setup, the bt016 are a slow steering tyre compared with a pilot power 2ct,the size of the tyre works in reverse to the sprocket size, the larger the tyre the further it has to go for 1 complete revolution,Griff never thought it was unstable & its bloody quick round the bumpy roads of Cornwall with no stability issues & the steering damper is only set to 3 of minimum, Anyway, just wanted some advise to save me time as I want it steering as it was before with the 180/55.Because there is now 10mm more effective rear ride height,I shall have to raise the front {maybe 2 rings, will try 1 first} or lower the rear ride height 10mm,Im just short on time & dont have a spare link to lengthen the chain,Maybe an early start & poossibly a mate from Tamworth might give me a hand for a couple hours setup & test, wink wink!
Cheers for all the suggestions Boys

Yes, just thought a bit more about the tyre size and it will make the gearing higher as you say, i would raise the front before the rear shock, it is better to do it this way as it will be better for ground clearance, there is only 10mm of thread adjustment on the rear shock.

I don't understand even with soft damping how it is stable with such a front end bias, but hey, if it works that is good in my book.

Surely Griff is not the best test pilot, that bloody pony tail of his would be like a wind sock out the back causing all sorts of instability:doug

badger I know wot your saying with his LOCK of hair,He has made some comments on your self when he's been down at my place, that Im not obliged to divulge,,,,,He he.Hows the roads at your end of the country,we are bloody gridlocked with flipping tourists at the moment,10 - 15 mile tail backs insome areas & thats without any accidents & Cornwall is quite small, only about a 100 miles from 1 end to the other, any way, hopefully the sprocket will be here in the morning & I can get fettling & testing & inbetween getting the place ready for my eldest boys 9th birthday party on Sunday!!!...................sorry dear wos that you calling ,couldnt hear you for the radio on in the garage!,that might bollox my browny points for the Spain/France trip, shes already staring daggers after I told her I was away for our wedding anniversery
Just another thought ,these bikes are known for being top heavy,as long as Ive got no clearence problems wouldn't it be better the lower the bike rather than raise it?

Did Griff mention my good looks then:pirate

I scrape the sidestand on my Factory on the road now and then, and it is standard fork height with 7mm of rear ride height on a 180/55, if you could lower it it would be better, but that would be my main reason for not doing it, suppose it depends how you ride and if you get her well over.

Have a fun party tomoz:nana

Post some pic's of your rear tire set up, it is alot easier to help you out with some pic's

Well fitted the 15t sprocket ,lowered the rear 5mm,raised the front one ring & finished putting it back together, just getting it serviced before Spain, anyway, totally recommend the 190/55,more secure in corners,Im still scrubbing in but I dont think the 180/55 will be going back on after the trip,I'll just keep theat for the Falco. With those adjustment & a few clicks on the steering damper, which when the front was raised to lower the forks it was found it wasnt doing anything, the bike has never handled so well,Im gonna crusify the inline 4's in the Picos in a couple weeks Hee Hee
Now Ive just discovered a small oil weep from the telltale hole for the water pump, bollox just done all that on the Falco, better get it done before I go,

Griff mate,Ishall be on the blower 2morrow
I must admit these Aprilias keep you busy & I love it!
