Helmet Tests

B

BIG UN

:rantsorry to bring mcn back on here, but i heard about the new helmet tests that have been carried out and they have he results:dunno

the top selling arai rx7,the dearest helmet on sale only gets 3 out of 5 apparently:eatcorn
whereas a lazer helmet at £60 gets top marks?!

helmet test results

its not a good testing system when you get £90 helmets scoring better than the top end arais and shoeis etc. Arai is refuting the testing methods, apparently its the impact test which is skewing the results.
I'l stick with arai.(esp since i own two rx7's!!!-and crashed in three)
ck

must admit,id still feel safer in an arai than a lazer helmet,if theyre good enough for 90% of racers including most of the tt riders theyll do for me.
i have the 4* hjc as a spare but it doesnt feel anywere near as comfy or solid as my shoei! its total quality.and next on my list is an arai after trying one on the other day,it feels even better than the shoei.

From what I've read the new test does an impact test near the visor mounting point which isn't that strong on a lot of helmets, apparently. If the new test makes manufacturers beef up the helmets in certain places it can only be good for us.

would hate to think what shinya nakanos head would have been like when his back tyre blew at 210 mph in a lazer .arai saved his life.look at the helmet in the 174mph crash with body flesh on the road the helmet looks intact oh yea and its an arai

Some strange logic there guys :dowhat An expensive Arai etc. must be better than a cheaper helmet because it's an Arai even though the tests say otherwise :confused

I bought my relatively cheap HJC after it proved far superior safety wise than the top Arai's, Shoeis etc. in a group test by RiDE magazine. Funny Arai should refute the test method - surely their helmets should be superior in any situation :dunno

The power of brand names :devious

If you click on the link at the bottom of that photo mate it shows a front view of the helmet..... or whats left of the helmet anyway, but then in a road crash at that speed i wouldnt expect any helmet to help much, on a track ya dont bounce off kerbs and other roadside furniture :thumbup:thumbup

Well my next helmets going to be a Shark RSR2 (5* on the test ) I tried a few on the other day and the Shark felt great. Agree with Tantrum...just coz it's a top brand name doesn't mean it's the best :dunno

I did my own test when I did a gymnastics display along the road after losing the front end!!!Ended up sliding up the road face first and the arai I was wearing took the punishment well, serious gravel rash but protected my head perfectly so I've stuck with them since then!!!

Sprocker recently bought an RSR2 find it much more comfy than the Arai I used to have. Some nice touches on the helmet as well like the 3mm thick visor.

I was persuaded when I was shown an RSR2 that had hit a tree and the rider had walked away

The tests results are interesting in that, I bought an AGV Ti-Tech and was alarmed to see a helmet test in MCN soon after my purchase informing me it was the crappiest helmet in the test!!! But according to this test it's one of the best!!! Similarly I recently bought an Arai on the basis of their excellent test results but this test suggests otherwise.....I also note the Arashi Viper gets 4 Stars & I do believe a bike magazine was giving them away free at the NEC a couple of years ago to punters who took up a 12 month subscription....Bizarre!

You have to be a bit careful thought about putting a magazine's helmet test against a 'proper' safety test. Magazines won't be using such repeatable, scientific methods to test the helmets.

On the other comments, I have an Arai and I love the lightness, comfort and feel of the helmet. Do think a lot of the talk about them is the power of brand names though. Thoroughly agree that good marketing will sort of 'brain wash' people into thinking that they're the best helmet when tests can show otherwise. Like any business Arai are out to make money and if they know the helmet has to pass a test they will make sure it passes 'that' test, the old one, but may not pay so much attention to all points of the helmet, as the new test seems to have shown :dunno
