Hello,
New to Aprilia with a spanking new Caponord travel pack
25km on the clock and already very pleased with my purchase
Looking forward to getting some km's on the seat here in New Zealand ( when weather improves a bit of course )
Cheers
Brent

Cheers Chewedup, the Capo1200TP was last built in 2015/16 when it was decided by Piaggio to cease production and only concentrate on the RSV4 1100 race replica's.

We all feel it was a bad decision, as the Capo12 is an excellent bike - just needed some of the usual upgrades given to models after 3yrs production, to refresh and keep up with Ducati's MS1200 tourer. Capo12 was always much nicer to ride than the Duke.....:D what's left of the stock is greatly discounted so it can be a bargain...... however, finding a dealer with the special tools and the Aprilia PADS service diagnostics might be an issue.

Most of the action happens over on the 2014-2017 Caponord (AF1 sponsored) forum....... there is a heap of info and accessories and photo's there. This forum was originally only for the 2013 first model year, and didn't really kick off once the other forum took on. But, it is a good quiet forum to get started on;)

Caponord

Hi ,
Bike is new (2015) after a short blast today now got 85km on the odometer
I am lucky enough to have an Aprilia dealer located 10 min from my house so service and repair should be no problems
😎
How do I post photos ?

G'day Chewe........

To post a photo...... select 'go advanced' and scroll down to 'manage attachents' (both these tabs are highlighted in brown/red colour).

Then select 'choose file' and look for the photo you want to 'upload' (you may have to edit the photo to reduce the size of the file to get it to upload to the forum. select 'open' then upload...... err it gets weird here and lately I've had to drag and drop the pic to the forum post, but it should load itself..... whatever works eh.......

So there you go...... pic posted;)

Ps Good dealer 10mins away...... you will be fine........ fabulous bike......... see mine-I had the H&B crashbars fitted and they are top notch quality and look great - many more pics over on the main forum (screens/lights/tank bags/cut down seats/tyres/exhaust servo eliminators/mufflers..... etc etc.

Pps should mention that you will probably experience the dreaded throttle hic-ups (unless Aprilia have sorted that with an update or something) - so I just rode around it by keeping the revs over 3k rpm or around 3.5-4 minimum. The frightening trait lessened as I neared 10k kms and was totally gone by 15k kms. Many tried all sorts of plug in fuel dongles and expensive exhaust optimisers with varying results..... but I think it is just a very tight motor with a very light fly wheel on the crankshaft coupled to the ride by wire throttle which just needs to be controlled by the rider until the motor has run in after 12-15,000 kms. It will drink oil in the first 1000kms (enough to empty the sight glass) and I recommend you insist on using 15w50 semi synth oil at 1000km (say Motul5100 or Motorex 4T semi) and change the oil every 5000kms until you hit 15,000 or 20,000kms then consider using full syn 10w60 M7100 or similar........ the oil will go black very quickly as the motor takes forever to run in...... if you use full synth from 1000kms you are at risk of having a high oil consumption issue....... please don't let your dealer convince you to use full syn from 1000kms..... Italian engines take 15k kms to bed in...;). Also don't worry about black hydraulic fluids - it was the rubber seals causing the discolouration not heat. They also become clearer with time and regular changes.

The best mod you can do now (or at 1000kms) is the 16tooth front sprocket. This will correct the stupid tall gearing and greatly help you to control the throttle hic-ups until the motor wears in and the bike becomes more 'amazing'.....I did 40k kms on mine before going to the dark side...... best for Xmas/NY mate:D

Oh one more gem for you...... 190/55 (yep thats 55 profile) for the rear fixes the dreaded main stand scrape..... Capo12 came with 190/55 in 2013 then Aprilia put a 180/55 on the 6" rim and you will find you scrape too easily while just touring....... 190/55 profile fixes that & corrects the 8% speedo error down to 4% ;)

Differences

Hey BrisbaNord,

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts regarding the differences between the KTM and the Nord if you’re so inclined.

Thanks,
inditx

:D....... Maaate....... the SDGT is AWESOME :D

The Capo12 is super comfy and that ADD suspension is the best, but the poor old Dorso 1200 donk puts out only 125 cshp (= 105hp rear wheel) whereas the 1290 humps out 173cshp (=150 rear wheel) and weighs 30kg less than Mr Comfy.

However, the GT is much more sport bike that can tour vs Capo12's touring bike that can sport........ but the red bike does look heaps more sexy than the functional but errrr different Austrian styling ;).... hehheh.... when I say sport I mean superbike sport...... fk me the Gt is quick..... :D:D

Both bikes fit my specs (min 100hp, 400kms range, fueled up weight not > 260kg, but obviously 233kg wet for the GT is a delight vs the TP at 260kg wet). The GT's single headlight is also way better than capo's tripple lamp..... but you won't spend any time admiring the GT from the front.......

I'd have kept my TP if the Aus dealerships hadn't collapsed after the new importer decided to screw them over and also not buy the Aus parts warehouse stock....... though I would have ended up on a 2018/19 GT as my Capo would have had 70/80k kms on it by now.......

Try not to get frightened by all the complaints in the 2014-2017 forum..... some UK and US owners just couldn't stop whinging, so much so I reckon Aprilia canned the model and tried to blame Euro4 to be polite.....;).

Oh yeahhh, if anything comes loose in the first 2000kms - Loctite it and you'll have no further issue with it (but be sensitive to alloy screws and threads by not over tightening and stripping threads eh ;)).

nearly forgot..... my panniers were difficult to latch on initially, then I read a post from a US guy and adjusted the latch lug near the foot rest and it was a breeze from then on...... try to find my posts as there are some tricks to getting it right (or the pannier might fall off while riding).

Cheers and best wishes from Aus

Thanks sir

Awesome info ,
Was already aware of the 190/55 and will do as soon as I wear out the dunplop
Has anyone tried a shorter screen to see if that reduces the buffeting around the helmet ?
I hate tall screens that require you to look through

G'day again Cheweeee,

Some guys did cut their oem screen down..... I think B050 in South Aus did that and it works as your helmet is in clean flowing air rather than the dirty disturbed airflow from that horrible standard screen. A tinted screen looks super sexy on a Caponord!

I had an MRA Vario Touring screen on mine which was not any taller than oem, but had the extra 'wing' to improve the airflow...... it worked well enough (it removed the harsh blistering 'ROAR'), but the screen on all Capo12's is too far forward and the airflow will always dump onto riders helmets and cause some wind noise.

Maybe try a 25mm cut down seat - might help get under the flow....and if you find you are tippy toes with the standard seat it will make a huge difference to controlling the bike at lights/parking. :)

Thanks BrisbaNord, exactly want I was wanting to know.

You're welcome...... - the 2014-2017 forum has a few pics but don't get upset by the endless complaints....even the KTM forum has it's problem owners who rail about issues before they consult with a KTM technician...... then they find out the issue was caused by a loose battery terminal or damaged connector.......

Capo ownership was no different...... some owners just don't deserve a lovely bike...... or they bought a tourer expecting it to be a superbike......:(

:D

Screen

Went to Hamilton today and took the screen with me to Godiva
After a discussion I had the screen cut down a few inches and a notch added at the bottom
Will let you know how it goes if the weather ever improves !!!!

Please let us know, I have the same issue.....

Yeh, that's a neat job...... and the notch at the bottom should reduce the vacuum behind the screen...... for winter & wet weather protection you'll need a tall screen with maybe a 'wing' spoiler to flow the air over the crown of your helmet - Givi make a screen similar to the Rally model's pricey "Aprilia Tall Screen" option or maybe Puig/MRA/other are still available. Have a look on that 2014-17 forum for photo's.... lots of US guys had tall screens and quite a few Euro guys had cut down screens........and much more.

Enjoy...... white looks so nice!

windscreen test

nice day so have got to try out the cutdown windscreen on ride to work
- much better , still has the noise of air rushing past but none of the booming from turbulence, pretty happy with the result !!!
