Hi to all,

Just joined the forum and I'm sure I'll get to know y'all.

I am going to view a 2003 Tuono 1000 on Saturday. I was hoping some of you experienced owners could share the wisdom that has come with ownership and highlight anything in particular I should look out for?

Any advice appreciated.

How's it gawn mucker.

Jist the same as you'd do fir any machine.

I'm an engineer and this is going to be the fifth bike in my collection, so I'm not new to the game. I more wanted to know if there is any specific problems known to this model. I heard the electrics can be a hassle.

Trouble with forums is you only hear about problems with bikes. It highlights them too much & can put people off.
If you know bikes, you'll know what to check, if it looks ok, you feel okay about it buy it & enjoy it.

My bike had done 20,000 when I bought it and the suspension set up bounced a bit as it hadnt been adjusted in ages, it still had some life in it and is now much firmer and returns to its original level after the first push down and not the 3rd lol.
The Gen 1 is also easy to flood when starting if you whack the choke on full!....ask about any starting issues!
It can eat batteries,so ask how old that one is!...I'd recommend using an optimate on it.
Count the teeth on the rear sprocket....1 less on the front and 2 more on the rear is a popular mod.....check the chain condition.

matching serial numbers and all that malarkey :)

Just make sure all the lights, dash works okay.....you can access lap timer mode using the dash.

Can't think of anything more specific to this model....hope its a cracker.

It's great on fuel too...very economic lol.

(Bloody good fun to ride though!) Doubt you'd be disapointed

Thanks for that Ric. The battery has just been changed for a bigger one. Its done 15k, so the valve clearances have just been done 300 miles ago. It was serviced and MoT'd then too, but is getting a full year MoT.

Out of interest, what is the MPG like anyway? If I buy it, I will be taking it to the Nurburgring in May. Its my 3rd visit. Love the place. It would be handy to know how much I can expect to spend and how often I will need to stop.

Hi Pappaphunk, Let me know when you are planning in May (don't think Tourist dates are published as yet) as a bunch of us go every year to the Ring (15th year this year) and we take over a small hotel so is a good bunch of us. That's a bloody long ride from Glasgow!

Also if you want a cross country route from St. Quentin (so about an hour of motorway) then all the good D roads through France, Belgium and Germany let me know as I have a cracking route that I can send you.

Hi and welcome buddy, MPG wise expect low to mid 40's on a run and around the 30's when on a hoon, I usually get around 90-120 miles to a tank sometimes 140 on a longer run.

Hi Pappaphunk,
Just checked and the Ring have published Tourist dates!

Take a look at : Opening times Nordschleife*- Nürburgring

May looks like the only Month available so far.

The dates are available from January till 27th of May. They have been up for a while. We usually stay in the same region, about 10k from the ring. This time I am going solo and have a beautiful house within walking distance (about 1.5 miles) from the village of Nurburg.

I only managed 2 laps last year as there was a bad accident whilst we were on track. The ring closed for the day after that and we were headed for lake konstanz the following day, then onto the Stelvio pass.

My visit this year I am lucky enough to have the Nordschleife open for 3 whole days, and a couple of evening sessions to boot. I usually buy the 9 lap card, but I came home with a few hundred euros last year (which I kept) so I might splash on the 25 lap card. It'll all come down to the weather.

The fuel figure seems reasonable, for a big cc Italian twin. I try to avoid motorways anyway, and 100 miles on the twisties usually equates to a pee and coffee break anyhow.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Its appreciated

I get 30 at best on the road and low 20 ' s on the track....mind you with my frame the bike thinks it's taking a pillion lol

And guess which **** flooded his bike yesterday lol

Never ever happened once on my fazer 1000. ..an it never happened to me before I read about it on the forum and now that's the 3rd time I've done it lol

If you want a rear seat cowl for it....there's a black one on ebay for £120 with the base plate.

Or "QB world of Carbon" do a non Carbon one in black for 60 quid or a Carbon one for 100 quid both of these require the base of the seat to be attached though....either pull apart your own back seat if you never take pillion or buy a 2nd hand one to butcher off eBay.

The bike looks 10 times better with a seat cowl.

Well, did I get myself a peach of a Tuono today...

Yes, yes I bloody well did :thumbup

Delighted.

I will post a picture one I get the road gunk washed off it. It was a long, cold ride home.

So I went out today to turn the bike over and get a right good look.

Firstly, it's mint. And I mean mint. The only grime I found was down at the swingarm, where the scottoiler is. There is also one tiny mark on the tank sticker, about the size of an ant. Not bad for a 12 y/o machine.

Right, so lets move on to the problem... It won't start! The engine oil pressure lamp is on and the dash reads "cold". It is turning over (what a racket when it's trying to fire up) and the battery power is down to 11.3v. I have put the optimate on it to get it up to 12v+ to see if that resolves the issue.

It lives in a garage which is currently -2 degrees, and drops at night. This has never been a problem with any of my Japanese bikes, but I'm not dealing with a Japanese bike now.

So, any ideas guys?

It just had a new battery a few days ago :crazy

So, maybe its the spark then? I 'll order some plugs and see how I get on. I won't be out on it anytime soon, but I'd like to hear the beast running all the same.

Dead easy to flood the bloody thing too when it's cold mate....don't go for full choke.

In my 15 minutes of trying to fire her up, I definitely had full choke at least twice. And there in lies the problem. Bloody tempramental Italians!
