10 days....

That's all... 10 days without being started and the Tuono wouldn't fire up today. OK, i accept it's cold.... however it's not THAT cold in the underground car-park.... yet today the T simply wouldn't play.

Was pretty close on the first press of button... but not quite there.

It's poor really ....

I'm not actually worried as i know the cause, resolution and fix etc... but i expect there will come a time when it does this at an inconvenient moment.

I'm pretty sure with the setup i have now, if it were being used more it would fire up no worries.. but i was expecting it to play today.

I have to say thats not a post i enjoyed reading mate! :thumbdown

It's been a while since I started mine, sometime in October I think. The weather has been utter crap for weeks and I had no desire to go for a 5min run to spend 2hrs cleaning salt and ***** off it.

Add in the fact it's been -1C ish the last few nights and that's a sure way for me to re-enact your problems......

:no Time to invest in Optimate shares! :yes

Hope you get it sorted ok.

Hope you get it sorted ok.

It's now off the bike and will remain indoors until March. Will get thrown on the optimate for 6-8hours every few days in rotation with other bike batteries.... So i'm not exactly 'sorting' it as such... but the fact it doesn't start doesn't matter too much.

However when times arise that i REALLY need it to work and it doesn't really really WILL matter.

It could be the battery was not up to full charge when you got the bike mate. This being the case it will run down quickly. When I bought my bike it had been standing in the showroom for about 6/8 weeks and started okay, and the bike is 3 yrs old. (I hope I'm not jinxing the buga now)
As the weather is pants now, I do put the optimate on once a week till the green light comes on

Weeksy mate, been telling you all along. Tuono's absofuckinglutely need to be kept on an optimate 100% of the time or that **** happens.

Your dash (and alarm if fitted) drain the batteries 24/7. That big old Rotax mill takes a really well topped off battery to fire up from cold, especially if it has been stood for any time.

If it makes you feel better Liz's Tuono usually all but flattens one battery completely getting it fired up in spring, once it fires up (& usually backfires or some such *****) it will then start as happy as a well fed kitten.

When the bikes are in daily use I have never had any issues, but they don't like standing.

Always had me Prillas on a trickle charger. Even in summer. Never had any starting issues. 25 quid from Halfords.

New battery mate. less than 3 months old.

I'm guessing the solar optimate thing isn't quite as good as i hoped at first.

Electrical one isn't viable due to lack of garage with power.

I must admit that this is the first bike ever that I've had on an optimate. Does not like being left alone at all :)

Its also worth bearing in mind how quickly the sprag clutch can let go when trying to start these bikes without a fully charged battery. Turning over two 500cc pistons takes it toll. Its this fact alone that ensures my bike stays on the Optimate because its an expensive job to fix

My Tuono lives on the Optimate when in the garage and fires up first time every time even after 3 months of being stood idle

Oh well looks like the optimate my dad gave me 3 years ago will need to go on this weekend.
I've been thretening to do it for a few weeks now.....this has pushed me to act.

Absolutely! Mine was bought new Sept. 08, went in the garage on Optimate in November and not touched till March '09. Started first time! Doing the same now and I'll let you know if any probs next March. I know I'm a wimp not using it in the winter but:-
1/ I don't have to (I'm lucky)
2/ Don't like the cold
3/ Don't like the wet
4/ Don't like salt and crap all over my bike
Oh and I don't like to have to clean all that salt and crap off it!
Seems a good battery, properly charged is the basis for getting that big 'V' spinning enough to get it running. Plus you might not have the fun of friggin about with sprag clutches and spendin a fortune! Optimate rules - OK!

I keep mine (and have kept all my bikes over the last 10 or so years) constantly plugged into an Optimate - in fact I wouldn't not use one.

Yup, pretty bloody common problem with the wiring being a little on the weak side on the prillas.

Just another point besides the don't use the throttle on startup one - if she floods, walk away. Once flooded (ie doesn't start first pop) then you are flogging a dead horse (in place of dead horse insert - Battery, Sprag Clutch, starter contacts, and most importantly riders sense of humour).

I'll have to say after replacing my sprag clutch (3 months without bike, $2500 parts and labour), and then soldering the regulator, replacing starter relay with higher specced one, adding switch so starts with lights off, and 14 rather than 12Ah battery - I haven't needed my optimate no more.

Yay me.

i would say the battery may be at fault, though it seems to be reasonably common.
I've never used an optimate or simular, though i ride all year through, might be an idea to run her up for 10 / 15 minutes (or so), every so often?
