Hi. I'm Jon and today is day 3 of blissful ownership of my 04 Mille. I stepped up from a yamaha 600, and I'm not looking back. Been riding street almost 4 yrs. I'm in "the OC" in SoCal.

A quizzle for you gurus; my speedometer works for about a minute or two when I start riding, then goes to 0 then to current mph, back to 0 a couple of times, then stays at 0 the rest of the ride. I can't have that. Speed sensor? Is this familiar to any one??

The speed sensor (located on the rear caliper bracket) is a notorious weak point on RSVs. New ones aren't too expensive (over here, anyway) and are pretty easy to fit. Unless anyone else knows of a better solution?
 
Hi mate and welcome, can't help with your speedo issue but I guess the miles will not be clocking up either. result :)

Make sure the bolts on the rear rotor are all there and clean, and also the sensor, make sure it's clean too.

Here's a post by Black Sabbath, taken from another thread. If it is your sensor at fault then this test will prove it either way. I did this test on my bike when mine went dickie ..



Take off the right hand side panel and follow the wire from the sensor up and locate the connector.
then do the following three tests with a multimeter.

1) Turn the ignition on, measure the voltage between the green/violet and blue/orange wires on the connector there should be more than 9 volts.

2) measure the voltage between the grey/white and blue/orange wire terminals there should be more than 6 volts. Now keep the probes inserted on the connector.

3) Raise the rear wheel of the ground with a paddock stand and slowly spin it. Or you could push the bike along. Everytime a disc bolt passes the sensor the voltage should drop to zero then rise again to over 6 volts.

If test 1 fails then remove the sensor and try again. If it still fails then your instrument cluster is shagged.

If test one was correct but test 2 incorrect it is the sensor thats shagged.

If tests 1 and 2 were correct but test 3 was wrong its the sensor.

If all three tests were correct then its the cluster.

Replacing the sensor is a tiny bit fiddly but a quick job and thats probably the problem. Water gets in it and knackers it mate.

welcome dude, either the speedo sensor, duff batt or you are pushing the starter befor ethe fuel has primed.OR its an alarm causing the hassle of reseting clocks.

Mmm, possibly knackered sensor...usually this is caused by water getting in to the sensor...but as above there are ways of checking the state of the sensor...welcome along to the 'Zone!

:thumbupwelcome to the zone and sprocker has it right.i live in santa clairita and have a 02 and 07 they are the poop..hope you can get your sensor fixed.did you take it off and see if was dirty..donnie.and if you want some carbon check out boyler he dosed awesome work he is on the zone..:doug
 
A pal of mine had this problem, it was dampness getting into the sensor. He cleaned it and sealed it up, no problems since. HGope yours is that easy!
