Hi, I had a new front tyre fitted today, and felt the company worthy of a mention.
After getting several quotes, I went to SMD tyres at Liegh near Wigan.
The owner fitted this himself taking great care and coating all the bolts and axle with antiseize.
A top job and only £110 for a Qualifier 2 all in.

sounds like a good deal and a top gadgie.

Well done fur taken the time tae post, wir awe quick tae diss poor service so we should be happy tae praise as weel!

good lads at SMD.. but please please please chaps, take the time and effort to remove wheels yourselves, i do understand that this will be a great challenge to some, but its all a big learning curve, read the manuals, ask on here, theres loads of info.. and you have the knowledge and confidence its done right.. its your kneck.

by the way, did owd paul fitted yer tyre ??

you have of course checked its not nailed on the back, lambretta stylee... ?

please re-check torque settings on fork pinch bolts.

Not quite nailed on but I did recheck all the torque settings.
Taking a wheel off yourself is no problem except when you dont own a front track stand.
Sometimes the minor saving isnt worth getting your hands dirty.

come on now tc, you,ve just paid £15 for having yer wheel removed and refitted.

how much is a front stand these days?

and getting yer hands dirty is good...

and i dont mean to offend by this, but some folk are a little offended by the act of manual work, your not a gay are you.

Rear easy peasy, front is a dilema, I like to remove my wheels so i CAN GET IN AND have a really good clean however I have twice dropped bikes off front paddock stands causing expensive damage. admittedly both times on fireblades which don't like conventional front stands which is why i was looking at a headstock stand. Tuono sits on it fine. bought an Abba front stand at NEC this week so will try out shortly. front on T is due for a change before next year.

away with yer yer floppy ****............................:thumbdown:cuckcoo:cuckcoo

I can't be arsed to fart around taking the wheels off when a good mechanic that I have known for yrs will do a good job and use a torque wrench.
But I know where you are coming from Garry

Hi folks Bandi here, not been on fur a bit due to bin oot ont bike! Hope yer fine n dandy. Have to Agree with ya Garry. My trusty Abba stand is a great piece of kit. As a four bike house hold we save £10-15 a wheel. Abba stands are about £90 and has paid for itself a few times over the last 15 years. Get to know your bike, get dirty, feel the sense of accomplishment ;) I get a tuono front tyre fitted for around £75 to a loose wheel from Camskills in Whitehaven. I don't go for the latest tyres, but usually a sticky little metzeler number, as i'll never outride the T.

Not been on here for a while , but there seems a divided opinion on taking your wheels off yourself,
Firstly for me this would have meant buying a front padock stand, spending twenty minutes removing the wheel
and then driving{at seven quid a gallon} fifteen miles to have the tyre fitted and then having to drive back and refit it.
As it was I rode the bike there and practically scrubbed it in on an extended journey back.
In the past I have restored several classic cars and even rebuilt the gearbox on a Benelli 350 but sometimes i cant be arsed trying to save a couple of quid .

Aye yer right t'Child, at £1.30 for unleaded, £1.40 for diesel its an expensive affair. But so is the cost of fitting a new tyre to the bike rather than a loose wheel (£15-20?). I drop my loose wheel off when shopping/working/passing through the town where the tyre place is. Then pick up when returning. As I use a car for work it would mean me going all the way home, get the bike out and clobber on and hitting Sellafield rush hour (nose to tail for 10 miles on predominantly 40mph roads) or having to take a couple of hours off work to take the bike through. I'd rather have my tyre fitted to a loose wheel, get home, 5 mins to fit it, clobber on and ride the other way on clear twisty roads ;) At the end of the day its midnight, but you have to be savvy with your cash flow....cos thats the problem with it - it flows!

Hey Tricky

Liked the idea of the front abba stand, but thought that you couldnt use it on a twin cos of the single pipe ? - or do they do a bracket or summat to lift the sump instead ?

Agree with Garry, always diy if you can - dont assume because your paying for a service that it will be a good one. My last experience with tyres was Leeds Bike Tyres... despite tellin em 3 time i wanted 34fr, 36 rr i actually got 41fr, 36 rr ! handled like a pig. Checked the pressures next day when cold and noticed that the axle adjusters were about 1cm away from the axle itself - axle nut was tight, but adjusters not butted up to the axle. Went spare with em as you can imagine... offered me a discount but told em to stick it!

Grrrrrr....

Have had a couple of trials with the front Abba stand with limited succeess I am abit of a mechanical fud though. Perhaps A bespoke bracket could be made using some scaffolding tube or similar however have got a front paddock stand that is good for the tuono but not for the blade so I am covered anyway.

Changed front tyre last week & paid £10.00 for the pleasure, would have been £5.00 for just wheel. I do like to remove the wheels myself purely to give them a real thorough clean before refitting to the bike but now I've got a bike lift it's much to get into the nitty gritty anyway. My route to Demon Tweeks took me over to Bala then Corwen, Llangollen, Horseshoe pass then on to Wrexham, so an enjoyable 100mile trip. Had the tyre fitted then home via the Wrexham Oswestry bypass & the tyre is scrubbed in by the time I got home.

In this case the best price I could get for a Dulop Sportsmart was from Demon tweeks anyway so no loss there however if I shop around for a rear & get one elsewhere I usually take the wheel & tyre into the local fitters in welshpool & give the lads a fiver cash to fit the tyre whilst the Boss is away on lunch.:thumbup
