Now this maybe a one off but i thought i should let you all know-
There i was minding my own business riding home down the A52 after a rather wet ride out today. When low and behold my front rose joint gear linkage bolt came undone.Luckily i was slowing at the time and the bolt stayed in the linkage as i pulled up, clutch in.Killed the engine and basically refitted said part.(me thinks i'll lock tight said bugger when home) So i gets home 5mins later takes the bolt out applies said lock tight and refits No Probs.
Now this is where it goes pear shaped !! I thinks while i'm grovelling about the garage floor i'll check the rear linkage screw. To get at it on the Gilles you have to remove the gear lever. This reveals a three posn kinda double figure of eight shaped boss the screw/bolt fits into.So i release the screw and the top section of the boss shears off (all three screw holes at about 5 mm section) Must be down to the thin section wall around the screw holes.PANIC ENSUES.
Luckily the back of the boss which attaches to the gear lever pivot still had about 5mm of thread in each hole, plus about 5mm of thread in each hole of the sheared off section. So what i've managed to do is screw the two parts back together again using 6mm allens screws.then ground off the tops of the allens screws to form headless gromits/set screws (i ground these flush with the boss face so they don't interfere with the gear linkage)
So if any off you guys have Gilles rearsets it may be worth fitting some kind of 6mm set screw ect into to NONE USED adjustment holes and basically strengthening the boss.A failure while giving it some gas and gear changing will result in your gear linkage flapping in the wind and a severe moment of panic which could prove costly.
Sorry no pics but i will sort if anyone struggle with exactly with exactly which part of the rearsets i'm on about, was to busy panicing a time
