Hi folks, I'm a long time lurker but seldom poster until now.

I have a 2003 Gen1 T that used to start ok until the battery went bad & the bike struggled to start a number of times before I fitted a new battery.

The problem I now have is that the bike seems to turn over ok but not fire & there is a rattling sound that I dread is the sprag clutch.

Have any of you had a sprag clutch go & what were the symptoms you had leading up to it?

What did it sound like when cranking with a shagged sprag clutch?

I welcome your comments & thoughts (along with abuse of wits & wags etc, lol)

Thanks,

Mik.

You would have though so but maybe when I said it turned over ok, maybe I should have said it seems like the starter motor is spinning at the same speed but I don't feel the engine is being turned quite fast enough to start.

p.s, have also tried the bike on jump leads & the result is the same, engine spins but just wont quite fire.

sounds like the problem Roy is suffering with on his at the moment and he is certain its the sprag clutch, try dropping him a PM as hes working away and may not pick up on this

That does sound like the sprag is on its way out.Trying to start the bike with the previous weak battery would'nt have done it any good either.

i just think mines a lazy ******* ...
it has some other problem..the bugger spins over and the dash flashes up no start so i shake the ****** from side to side then try again n it starts it could be the tip sensor..
but sometimes you poke the button and nothing,, not even a click of the solonoid
but it dose spin over lazy on the starter motor and the sprag dose jump in and out sometimes when you crank it over for to long...its just a lazy ******* and is pissed off wi being caned all the time.but i cant control mi sen its just a rush every time i wind that throttle open

Hi Roy,

Mine sounds like the sprag is jumping in & out & not quite catching the engine to spin it over fast enough.

Don't know about the tip sensor as I have tried it on a paddock stand & sidestand but not (yet) shook it in anger :). Might try that later & am contemplating filming the attempt to start & put a Youtube link later tonight or weekend.

I'll keep you posted.

If it's the sprag clutch you'll firstly get that sense of the starter motor turning but the engine's not spinning up as firmly as it should. Perhaps even a bit of a whining noise at first.
Then, if you persist, you get something that sounds like a bag of nuts and bolts being put through a blender on full speed. It's an expensive sound. At this point stop pushing the starter button and cry. Then get your wallet out.

If you're in doubt then check it out - the more you try to start it the more expensive it's going to be if it turns out it was the sprag. I was lucky (relatively speaking) - The broken bits of clutch didn't do too much damage internally, so I got away with minimal replacement parts.

I have had starting issues on my bike (which have now been sorted) and have been told that my sprag clutch is on its way. If my bike (gen 1 T) turns over for anything longer than a couple of seconds I hear the nuts/bolts/blender noise at which point I release the button. It is starting up ok now (well mostly) but still makes that terrible noise now and again.

Ive spoken to an Aprilia main dealer for a quote for repair and been told to expect the thick end of 400 quid.

Has anyone had the repair done any cheaper (preferably in the north west?) Apologies for hijacking the thread! I know you get what you pay for and the last thing I want is a bodge job and wishing I'd splashed out on the credit card.

thanks

Went in to speak to Griff the other day as he is only down the road (thanks for the Jaffa cakes :cheers) & gave me a price for bits only & ride (push) in & ride out.
Thought about doing it myself for a little while, got scared & will now book it in to get done.

The poorly T is being picked up Fri am for some Aprilia Performance TLC, should be done by Fri pm. Yay :)

Muchos kudos to the boys at Aprilia Performance.
New Sprag, uprated battery & sorted the wiring fault which killed the battery & sprag in the first place.
V happy bunny!!!
