Gearbox issues

Hi guys,

I have a Tuono V4 Aprc from 2011 with nearly 11.000 km

I started having some issues with the gearbox, in 4th.

The bike has been service at an Aprilia dealer (although I think that their knowledge is at the minimum very limited). As per my biking experience I have more than 18 years, and more than 14 bikes owned and never had problems of this kind.

Now finally the dealer (new Aprlia dealer) said that I have a problem with the gearbox, and I need to change 3rd and 4th (almost 900€ - parts and labour).

I question the dealer, in a 10.000km bike seems excessive, first they said it was the quick-shifter and also added that Aprilia was aware of some units with gearbox problems.
I complain to Aprilia Portugal, but they weren't very helpful.

I'll go now into the phase of complaining to Aprilia Italy, but I'm guessing the reply will be the same.

Does anyone have similar problems !?

That's not good,I,m not sure if this is a cassette type box or a major strip down ,hope you get some joy :thumbup

Hi Blade,

It's cassete type, so that limits a little the cost.
But my major concern and criticism is not that, it's the fact that a dealer admits that Aprili knows that some units may present, or have the problem, and even after that charges the client the full amount.

In my case, even if I like the Tuono, is to fix the problem and then trade it for a brand that knows how to take care of their clients.

Yes feel for you fella but other bike makers are the same,I know someone who has a BMW S1000rr it dropped a valve at 7000 miles and he was told sorry 5k to fix your bike,it's sat in his shed in bits for nearly a year :no

I understand tour situation as I had a gearbox rebuild last year on a 2012 V4 APRC.

My dealer blamed both the quickshifter and a manufacturing problem with the gears.

Aprilia state in their handbook that you can use the quickshifter above 4000rpm, which you can, but it has the effect of wearing the dogs on the gears so that they end up not engaging correctly.

There is a redesigned 3rd and 4th gear available from Aprilia that I believe is also hardened better.

I had a bill for £760 and that was not including me sourcing 6th gear from the states myself as Aprilia in Italy couldnt supply it for nearly 3 months.

Hi Rizla,

My problem is exactly what you mention.
In the dealer, they went to the point of stating that in Italy, Aprilia is aware of the problem, that means that they know the problem, so the correct, honest, thing to do, was a recall.
If the manufacter is not honest enough and passes the problems into to the clients, there is only one solution, change brand !

That's one reason I use my clutch and only use the quick shifter if I really need to,its pretty obvious it will put more strain on your gear box internals god help Suzuki if they fitted them on there GSXR's :no

But the quick shifter is sooooo addictive :down making me think twice about using it this thread is :down suppose its better to use the clutch that have a gearbox job on my hands!!!

Well it's like anything that's basically race technology,longevity isn't what it's about,:bawling

This makes me worry. I had gear box issues last year before it was off the road. I keep hitting a false neutral between 2nd and third which no matter how slow you go the noise is terrible when knocking it back in! I was hoping its me just changed boots but reading this now thinking it could be more sinister! I was sure some reported the low gear changing no being smooth.

The tech that fixed my gearbox said that the quickshifter is excellent with variable kill times, but should only be used on full throttle high rev changes to protect the gearbox.

Aprilia have fcuked up by telling the world that it is ok to use it above 4k rpm at any load. I rarely use mine now :dunno

Got to agree with Rizla on this one , i only use it at full chat and when on track , hardly use it on the road and it just dosent like it at low revs or when not on full throttle .
I used to always get a false neutral between 5th and 6th if i wasnt giving it some .

Maybe im just a hamfisted lout without a clue !!!!!

Well I think I will set mine only to work above 6K when it goes on.
Does anyone know of any gearbox issues using a QS on the twin

I almost bought that Dan, but was worried it may go the same way as the old one as it's a 2011.

The dogs may already be worn[emoji15]

Yeah i have noticed that it works best on full throttle and high revs Rizla, think ill stick to that sort of formula and try not to use it too much :thumbup

I only use mine when I have an unsuspecting sports bike rider look at me at a set of lights or something :yes then it's game on :lol

Hi guys,

Update.
4th and 5th need to be replaced but as it is a "known problem" the dealer got it in a way that it is going to be done under warranty.

Nevertheless there seems to be some issues with the quick-shifter

Don't know if the new parts are stronger or not.
