Fuel tank tubes and overflow

Hi all

I have noticed that when the tank gets wet or when washed, the filler cap holds water and does not escape from the hole inside. When you open the filler cap the water ends up getting in the tank with the fuel !!

I have tried blowing into the hole with a tube to no avail. Is this hole meant to be an overflow or sealed? I havent taken the tank off to see if any tubes go from the tank etc.

Any tips please?

Not sure about the gen2 bikes but I know the gen1 tank has 2 ali nipples which screw into the bottom of the tank, one is to allow water etc to escape from around the filler neck. These corrode internally & block the hole as its very small, then what you describe happens. These are on the rear R/H side of the tank (if you are sitting on the bike) & are a right pig to get at, once removed you can clean the corrosion out, I also opened mine out with a larger drill to help prevent it happening again.

did you manage to unblock your over flow / rain drain hole ?

If not... and for the forum.

Just as nickfubar says, on the gen2 the tubes will come out of the bottom of the tank, some older models the tube come out via the fuel pump, either case, it will be the left tube as you face the side of the tank from the right side of the bike. the ends of the tank have a silver elbow connection, this is where limescale and corrosion builds up.. you may be able to unblock with some gas/lighter refill bottle direct into the overflow hole of the filler, if not a small drill bit once the tank is removed should pull the corrosion particles out of that bend.. drill by hand (fingers only)

Hope this helps someone.

Take care.
