Front stand (Fork removal)

I want to do this on the cheap with my existing kit as funds won't stretch to Abba stands or proper kit at the moment.

I don't have a garage as such so the Rafter suspension method is out.

I was going to use a Rear paddock stand and a Trolley jack under the sump with a block of wood to protect. Is there room or will the exhaust need to come off?

I think i read some time ago that someone made a wooden stand to fit under the Triple clamp/ bottom yoke.

It would need to be quite stable as the bike could be left for a few days like this.

Thoughts please.

Would you really run the risk of dropping the bike for the sake of a few £ ?
Fleabay had some bargains recently, I bout my ABBA stand for £40.

I know from experience that short cuts often lead to more expense.
Cant you hold out till you get the right gear?

Regards

Jake

i use my homemade abba style stand and then lash the rear wheel tightly around it while i have a little help holding the rear down

or

i use an offcut of timber under the front cylinder if i have the bellypan off along with my abba type stand

Kev,I looked at that possibility last time I wanted to get the front jacked up and I couldn't see anywhere to safe to locate the timber, whereabouts exactly do you use?

I've modified an old paddock stand along the lines of the one Sensei posted about so I can lift the front at the fairing mounting but I don't want to leave it with all the weight hanging from there.

Also, who was it on here that started making those nice single sided, wheeled lifts a while back? They looked the best idea yet,I think whoever it was went into production and then it went quiet?

Put a bar through the swingarm pivot and then rest each end on axle stands or similar.
Then put a rope from the triple clamp to the roof beam in you garage to keep the front up or weight the back if no roof

not ideal but cheap

Apemunky, First off don't risk it, second what part of the country you in?
The reason I ask is that my forks are going over to reactive suspension next thursday so when they are back my underheadstock front paddock stand will be free for the use of, thats if you can wait a couple of weeks.

Very kind of you Mike, i'm in no massive rush but just want to sort it before the weather gets worse.

I'm Kent near Tonbridge, where are you?

If no good i'll use all available methods, Paddock stand, Axel stands, Trolley jack & Timber under the front. (no roof available)
What good possibly go wrong? (apart from hundreds of pounds of damage!)

I'm In beverley, East yorkshire, what i can do is one my forks are refitted i can find out how much it would cost to post the front stand to you.
its similar to this one 280415747921(ebay)

The weight distribution on these bikes seems very front heavy,if I put a bar thru' the swing arm pivot on my Sv and support it on axle stands it's almost on the balance point.

Doing the same with the Mille just lifts the back wheel  leaving all the weight loaded on the front.

Those stands of Little1's would seem to be the ultimate way to do things, did he ever go into production? The website link is a deadend.

The original german version looks superb, but then at that price it should do.The only thing that puts me off (apart from having no spare cash :devious) is that neither of them would work if you have lower crash bungs fitted.

trying to upload a picture for ya
but i must be having a bad day as i can't make head nor tail of the process on this new forum set-up!!!!!!

ok, gave up on the forum album

uploaded pic to my site instead
stand.jpg

see if that works???

you can see the bit of 3x2 just under the front cylinder

well done Kev,
now that's the sort of quality fitting I was after, proper trick!

I'll have a look at the options tomorrow, see if I can get some strong bar to go through the swingarm pivot to rest on axel stands and peruse my off-cuts collection to see if i can find a suitable piece that the Missus hasn't lobbed on the fire yet.

Failing that I'll end up buying yet another bloody stand but as someone alluded to earlier I have much to lose if it topples over and the forks can wait a while.

I had to abandon the job today when i couldn't get the calipers off as I only had a 7mm allen key (unusual size?) and it wasn't man enough to get the bolts off without risking a **** up but by the time I bought a 7mm allen bolt it had started to rain again.

Thanks Kev,I'll have another look next time I take the belly pan off, although last time I stuck my head under there it looked as if the only place to wedge a piece of wood was blocked by the pipe. :confused

You have just inspired me to make an effort to copy an Abba stand though, much more satisfactory than a length of 12mm bar sitting on axle stands.

hardest bit on the stand was getting the bits of metal to fit into the frame holes neatly.
for one side i used a long bolt and some nuts welded up and then ground it while it was spinning in the drill until it fitted nicely. worked a treat!!!
the other side i happened to find a tube with the correct diameter that was just welded up solid.

the timber has had a bit of trimming so it fits between the oil cooler pipe nice too

i now just use some rope and lash the back wheel to the stand while the missis leans on the tail unit

Well I made a stand of sorts for £15 and it seems really solid.

Fit rear paddock stand
I bought 1m of 12mm steel bar for £2 to slide through the swingarm mounting bolt.

Bought 3m of 9"x2" wood and cut it into 1m lengths.
I put a length under the swingarm pivot and put my axel stands in position under the bar, then marked the feet of the stands and drilled out cups for them to fit into so the wouldn't move.

Next cut one of the lengths in half again and placed either side of the front wheel and used them as spacers in conjunction with the front paddock stand to raise the front 2" higher than normal.

Slide the last 1m of wood under the one holding the axel stands to use as a spacer to get more height then remove the rear paddock stand.

After removing the front end I jammed 2 lengths of 2"x2" under the front to support it

Ok, not as slick as an Abba stand but it works, has cost me little and I will only ever need it to remove the forks or do the head bearings.
