Front end shudder when braking

Any body out there experiencing this problem? Dealer checked disc runout, pad wear, headstock adjust, concluded worn fork slider bushes were cause, $900 later(Aprilla refused waranty as normal wear and tear 19000KMS)?No improvement.Feeling ripped off. Looking to others to help resolve problem.

G'day Green62, I spotted a comment on the AF1 forum site recently - the post advised to clean the disc's first to remove any crap that may have built up in one spot. i do this with some Methylated Spirit and paper towel until no more crud soils the towel, but you could use brake cleaner spray (once calipers are removed).

If the dealer has measured the disc for run-out and is sure they are straight, then it could be a number of things in combination.......while you are cleaning disc's you could remove the pads and clean/grease the slider pins and spray wd40 or similar on to the pistons and wipe clean (take care not to spray on brake pads....best to remove them)... I do this at tyre change time and it is really nice to have freshly lubed calipers working properly.

I've had brake shudder before (on my FZR 1000 in 1994) and I had to buy some EBC Braking disc's at great cost back then to solve the issue (the discs were wobbly!).

I doubt very much that the forks could wear out in 19,000kms - I have 30,000kms on my TP and all is well. (I don't do stoppies or wheel stands and ride smoothly, so I rarely need to jam on the brakes unless some moron does the unexpected while I'm having a bad day)......I will replace the fork oil when my front tyre is due, as I think 40,000kms for fork oil is pretty extreme.....

Might be worth a critical look at the front tyre for abnormal wear/front wheel bearings (mine were almost dry when I first checked them at 13,000kms).

Cheers and good luck cleaning!

Brake shudder

Thanks for the feedback, disc runout is within spec, new tyre fitted, discs/ buttons cleaned no improvement. I do not do stoppies, off road work. After 36 yrs of motorcycling my Cappo is the first new bike i have purchased, I treat it very kindly. last bike had over 90000k and fork bushes still ok. Checked other forum, what are your thoughts on mods to make discs fully floating? Forgot to mention, front rim does have a slight flat spot aprox 75mm long 6 mm deep, unsure when/ how this happened, reluctent to spend $600 on new rim in process of elimination.

Cheers mate, similar CV for me, had a gasp when you mentioned the flat spot in the rim!

That's gotta be something that you'd feel when braking (though I'm not claiming any 1st hand experiences on that one). I wonder if you could get the rim rolled/repaired so it is within specs again?

If that isn't the go, maybe look at some trick aftermarket wheels rather than an OEM replacement......still likely to be very pricey, and wreckers are not likely to have many un-dinged rims (?)......

I've read that some Euro owners have replaced discs already....but I have done 30,000kms on mine and they are as straight as when new (but I've not hit anything hard enough to dent a rim or cause crash damage ...;) - they must be very hard on their equipment/ride in harsh conditions). There are some neat pics of replacement wave discs on the 014-106 capo forum......

G'day Green62, just re-read and spotted a few typo's in my last post........anyway, I had EBC 'full floating' discs on my 94 FZR1000 after the oem discs went wobbly - they were all I could buy at the time......be advised that full floaters are noisy buggers as they are loose fitting on the disc carrier buttons - semi floaters are the standard style as fitted to all road bikes and are silent over bumps/gutters etc.

A mate of mine (a bike mechanic) went into manufacturing bike discs for a while before cheaper ready made discs put him out of business, but he was stunned at the amount of 'slack' or "slop" that the full floaters had. (he was also a race team mechanic and bike restorer).

I'd stick to semi floaters - those wave style discs look great - see pic in other forum.....

Front end brake shudder

Although discs were within spec, replaced discs/pads problem solved. No thanks to dealer, donated $1500 replacing fork bushes, front axle, front wheel and front tyre without resolution at 19000kms (still within warranty).
