Front Brake Pads

A

amb67

I have checked all my disc bobbins and they are fine!

Just stripped down my front brakes to check all was well as I had experienced judder last Sunday on a ride out. Well when I removed the pads the inner ones are more worn that the outer ones, yet the pistons all move freely!!

I checked the thickness of the thinnest pad and the friction material is around 2.0 mm thick.

Now my questions are:

1. Has anyone else noticed that the pads wear down unevenly?
2. If yes to the above was it the inner pads that were worn more?
3. What is the thickness of the friction material on a set of new pads?
4. What make of pad do you all use and what are your experiences with them? Good, Bad, Indifferent?

PS. Forgot to mention that the brakes only pulsed after heavy braking, not all the time. I reckon my issue is that the pads are low and are unable to disperse the heat build up. Disc run out is minimal and they are in good condition too.

You dont go fast enough to need front brakes .....................

I use SBS brake pads and they seem to be wearing okay but seem to need quite a bit more work to bring them up to temp then they are almost too aggresive.
The original pads wore very unevenly though.

Been doing a lot of reading on many different forums and it seems that the pads to go for are the EBC Extreme Pro.

Not cheap mind at almost £90 for a complete front set.

OK topgear is over now.

Why don't you change the inner with the outer ones ?
2mm is still quite much, how thick are they new.
What is the price of oem ones?

Cheers

Topgear, ffs have you got no taste Alain? A bunch of guys who know diddly **** about cars getting paid £500,000.00 a year to p155 about all day with technology they don't understand. :rant (Rant over)

Changed the pads round as you have pointed out, but why do they wear more on one side?

I have found some technical data that suggests the overall pad thickness when new is 7.4 mm so by my reckoning they are still OK for a few more miles.

OEM pads are £71.20 per caliper. So it'll be EBC me thinks.

Afther a couple of beers and a bottle of prosecco it was quite fun I must admit :dunno

Did not send out yet so watch it :biggrin

I don't know why one wears more than the other, where is Griff?

Oemf did know they where that expensive, does carbone lorraine do Aprilia?

I was just out of

Sorry :hail please post them.

Yeah, found some Carbon Lorraine 1033 SBK-5 for £70 in the RSVR Shop.

Can't decide if it's gonna be the Carbon Lorraine 1033 SBK-5 or the EBC Extreme Pro's. :dunno

Well I reckon I have around 1000 miles left to make my decision. :roll

I was looking at those Armstrong pads but no one has done any reviews on them, well not what I could find anyhow.

Was you pushing it on the track?

I'm very wary of cheap pads, would hate to have them let me down when I need them the most.

They were recommended by another member here some months ago. Before the Amstrongs I had EBC on and I haven't noticed any difference. I'm not superfast so can't say how they would perform at extreme condicions. I didn't notice any fading at the track though.

Here you go Alan - used these on road and track and seem to work fine for my modest riding talents.

I use Carbon Lorraine, dont realy like them :), you realy have to pull the lever to get some stopping power out of them.

Will try new pads next week and could have a more valid comparison.

I have been using Armstrongs for some time now on my 1000 Fazer cos they were cheap and have found them to be very good performance wise but they wear the disc's at an alarming rate.
I am going to have to replace all three disc's next time round as local shop only just passed them on last Mot :dunno

There's always a bloody down side to cheap, isn't there? :roll

Cheers for the heads up mate, rather pay out for expensive pads than buy discs every 3rd set of pads.
