Front Brake Juddering

M

mark99

Gents,

2002 RSVR. Lightly ridden and kept dry.

Front brake judders under hard braking so much so it's spoiling the ride.

I cleaned up the (semi?) floating disc buttons some of which were sticking which reduced the judder slightly.

What's the next thing to check?

Many thanks

Mark

Check the calipers are bolted tight, and the pads are in good shape. Also wheel bearings. And are the discs straight. If you have already freed up the seized pins then it can't be them.

If its not that then check disc run out with a dial guage although you need to find out the tolerance limit.
You will need the front wheel off the ground to do this.

quick check is to draw a line with a marker pen around the disk where brakes make contact on both sides, then apply the brake a couple of times and let go, then spin the wheel
pen should rub off all the way round, if disks are warped there will be prominent places where pen remains

Easy option is to duck tape a pencil to the fork leg and let the point touch the disc, spin the disc and see if the pencil stays in contact or if it runs out of true, usually sticky disc buttons make it feel warped at light braking pressure, check the calipers and pistons are working smoothly, check head races, if these are all OK then it is likely a disc

mark 99, mate I reckon the problem is the thickness of the disc's are uneven. If the disc's warp from a crash or even from high temps when breaking you will not notice any problem until{ because the floating of the disc will copr for some time), as they now have a high spot. This spot wears and the dic's end up with uneven thickness. Hence the judder. Try a micrometer and check disc thickness. If this is the prob. the disc locating fingers will need truing and the disc's machined. good luck.Steve.

at 15k my 02 milles OE brembos were nice and juddery, for the reasons mentioned above.

CK what did you do to sort your brake judder out please.

Thanks for the info so far lads. Having a play this weekend.

Mark, have another go at cleaning the disc buttons as this is the usual problem. Use brake cleaner and a small amount of WD40, but remember to clean up thoroughly after. Put a pencil throught the disc button and wiggle it, then keep trying to turn the disc button with you thumb and forefinger until it easily rotates

Will do Legs.

Yesterday, removed calipers and cleaned out the pistons etc, pads..... another definate improvement but still judders at high speed.

Can you move the disk buttons by hand? Mine were solid and this caused the same problem you are having.

Jacko,

Yes I can now move each button by pinching with finger/thumb and turning.

Will be changing pads next.
