Hi Guys, my first post here. Ferry to the Isle of Skye today to exchange my Honda SP2 for a beautiful, low miles, 05 Factory that I saw in Wigan a couple of weeks ago. Unlucky with the weather, raining all day. The bikes were exchanged I looked the Factory over and pressed the starter, and after a bit of a struggle it purred into life. Switched off, exchanged paperwork and the guy set off back to Wigan with my SP2. I went to move the bike and it wouldn't start:dunno Lights OK, dash on, click from the solenoid, but not enough battery. Waited an hour and half for a jump start, and then I had an hour or so to ride the bike around Skye to try and get enough charge before the ferry home. Now comparing the two bikes, the SP2 had more instant grunt, more weight on the wrists, higher (better) screen, more abrupt throttle on/off, taller gearing, ear shattering noise (Akrapovics), extreme stability, harsh but well damped suspension. The RSV is much free-er revving, easy to ride at low speeds (in comparison) no effort to get it to turn, fantastic!, firm but comfortable suspension, quiet when I wanted it to be (standard cans), no back brake! Came back to the ferry terminal and boy was I impressed:thumbup But I couldn't get neutral! and after holding the clutch lever in for a minute in the queue it slowly stalled the engine! The SP2 had a hydraulic clutch, never any bother, or getting neutral. Got back home, the bikes battery looks new, but is only 10AH, I've put it on charge overnight. Clutch, and rear brake fluids look clear, no obvious leaks. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give my first impressions:doug
Hope there are easy fixes

Hi Mate.

Well done on ditching the Honda for an ape, Mines an 06 RSVR but with Ohlins all round.

Let us know how the battery thing goes and if you need a new one let me know.

Loads of great peeps on here to offer advice , help etc.

Enjoy the bike.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Aprilia Mate. :thumbup

That battery sounds knackered mate, ditch it and get an uprated one - do a search on batteries and you'll see what you need. The clutch issue is a simple fix, bleed it out and if it's still heavy or not to your liking get yourself an MPL slave and all will be sorted. :doug

Congrats!

Battery should be higher capacity. Also keep it on a charger when not in daily use.
Clutch can be solved cheap/easily.

Back brake is a royal PITA on Aprilia's. Can be solved by relocating the master cil. using aftermarket rearset (see the for sale section!)

A pair of Akra's will give you at least the same sound as the Honda.

Congrats on your purchase - sounds like you've had a thorough education in RSVs just on your way home! Not many more bad bits to find (read up here on batteries, sprag clutch, starting proceedure, MPL clutch slave, etc.) and the postitives far outweight the negatives.:thumbup

Hey there, Was talking to the guy who went to Uig to give you a jump start and said it was a red Factory? If you had asked anyone in the village they would have sent you my way (about 40metres from the filling station) and a jump start would have be no problem. If you're on Skye give us a shout and a nippy jaunt will ensue!

Wow! thanks for all the replies, Fox only 40meteres away, who'd believe that. Yes that was my red factory, one quick jump start and I was away. Nice guy too. He tested the battery terminals when bike was running and showed 14+ something volts, so it seems no probs with the charging circuit. Anyway read through a lot of posts on the forum and did a quick bleed at the clutch master cylinder this morning and seems perfect now. I've got an Optimate I'll be connecting to. Luckily rarely use the back brake, but seems that you have to take the caliper off and turn it upside down for a better bleed to get that working.
Great forum, thanks for the help

welcome to the zone sir. after getting my ape in the later part of the summer, the best mod done so far is an MPL slave cylinder as mentioned before - big difference.

Thanks for the MPL link, I've e-mailed them and let them know I'm on RSVzone. Hope its nearer £90 than £126!

yeah it should be 90 delivered. makes the clutch action quite a bit lighter. they say by 30% bit it feels more than that. a good guy that I met through the zone fitted it for me as i'm a bit of a 'Frank Spencer' in the garage! I believe the standard slave is notoriously weak and often fail through time.

Welcome to the zone mate. I liked the SP2 from years back but never owned one. Always been the italian route for me, thoroughbred as they say. :inlove

You're first encounter with an aprilia and the issues are standard faults really. Loads of threads on here about those issues. Back brakes on these are always crap even when they work. However, the front brakes are some of the best on the market, in fact they are the best i've ever used so that makes up for the rear. Clutch is a beast that needs bleeding on a fairly regular basis and you get used to finding neutral. Come on its italian, its called character! Or is it character building:dunno

Welcome matey, same as Spud (above), always fancied an SP, but it just never happened...........such is life.

Anyway, you`ll love the Ape; awesome bike ! :thumbup
