hi guys!!

ive been reading from afar and posting very in frequently, im sorry but due to work commitments and young family i just dont get the chance to post everywhere i want to!!.....but.....i cant stand it no more!!

guys ...make no mistake rotax and aprilia state to all aprilia dealers ( take no **** from them!!) valve clearences need to be checked on the first service!!!

Now some dealers will give the first service for free and some may just charge you for parts but please check that they are doing the valve clearences !

so cheap services are to be viewed with suspicion.........if your going to do a full service on a T then it will take at least 5 hours ..........if it takes a shorter time than this ask questions!!!!! maybe request a valve clearence sheet , we supply em! proof.....maybe!??

protect yourselves guys...ive rang large dealers i this country with customers of mine listening on the conversation if they did clearences on first service, the ***** that spewed from the numbskulls arse (youve probably seen it just below his nose) was slanderous...un real!!

knowledge is power guys, you are the customers you are allowed to ask questions , you dont have to be rude, but we should cover ourselves!


sorry to rant guys but its quite clear that you guys here give a damn about the bikes we ride......

Got my 600 mile service next week, are you talking more about the first 'proper' service, or do the valves need looking at as part of the 600 mile one?
 
Ok, I know that I've seen this several times since I've had my Tuono. My dealership doesn't do a valve adjustment at 600 miles. It just doesn't make sense to me that an engine that uses shim under bucket valves would need adjustment at 600 miles. Is this check required because of shoddy work at the factory? If you look at the design of the 990 motor valve train (pretty much like all other shim under bucket systems) there really is only 2 ways for the valves to get out of adjustment. 1.) the valve recedes into the seat or 2.) the "bucket" somehow compresses. That's the advantage to a shim under bucket system.....they almost never go out of adjustment. Help me out here, as I'm certainly not an Aprilia guru. I can only go by my experience with other bikes that used this same system for opening the valves (Triumph Sprint ST, FJR1300, H-D VRSCR, KTM 620 RXC, Kawasaki GPZ 750, etc.) and none of these bikes have called for a valve adjustment anywhere near 600 miles. In fact, the FJR doesn't call for one until 26,000 miles (!). Even the old air cooled Ducati motors, which were notorious for their valve adjustment schedule, did not require a valve adjustment until around 3,500 miles. What makes the V990 motor different?

One more thing.....has anyone ever actually had to adjust the valves on the V990 motor at 600 miles? Please, no "I know someone that did" or "I heard of someone that did", but anybody actually made an adjustment at 600 miles?

my dealer does check them but when i asked about this he did honestly say that he couldnt remember the last time one needed adjusting(and its pretty rare if one does)i got the impression its more a matter of removing the covers and just having a quick look why i dont know:dunno
Has aprilia had some sort of problem with the valve gear in the past that they just want to keep on top of??????????????

I know where your coming from thier Johny boy, I've heard that kind of talk off dealers 'oh it doesn't really need doing'.
But dont these engines get 'bench tested' for a while? Am I being old fashioned with that assumption?.
To be quite honest I've treated my other Prilas like ***** on the maintanance front and never once had an engine problem. Oil and filter changes apart and basic maintanance, nothing.
Have I been lucky ?, 4 Prilas [falco ,tuoldo, Rsvr ,new T,] and around 25000 miles of relitively trouble free riding. If i was buying a second hand bike I would treat it like any other car/bike purchase and look/listen for the obvious and probably suss the seller out more thouroughly than the vehicle.
Modern bikes are built to the highest standards these days and given that that the engine in question has been around a good while is pretty much proof its strong.
You hear and read all sorts of horror stories about any number of bikes but I personally think the Aprilia product is excellent.

Ps, my mate has done more miles on his new T than me and no probs as yet. still not heard or done anything either.

Big thumbs up for Taz Motorcycles then, on collecting my brand new T last weekend I was told a number of times that the first service was a big job would take approx four hours give or take because valve clearances will need to be checked, Taz do offer a lifetime warranty on their bikes as long as they carry out the servicing work so surely they are going to do it the right way else it could end up costing them in the long run.

Only problem is I have to pay for it and it's £200 quid!
