I would prefer to get some oil circulating around the engine before it starts after a long period of standing.
Is there a way to allow the engine to spin over on the starter but not start ?
If the stop button is in, it wont spin over.
I supose I could pull the plug caps off. (or even take the plugs out & put a bit of oil down the bores)
Is this a good idea ?
In the good old days you could do it with a kick starter.
Reading all the problems others seem to be having, I was thinking it would take a couple of attempts to start after the winter, but it fired up first touch.

Why do you want to do that?:confusedJust start 'er up as normal and let 'er warm up untill the tickover settles down to its normal engine speed.

If you take the plugs and caps out to turn over the motor, fit the plugs back into the caps, else you could fook up the ignition. And why do you want to drop some oil down the bores?Piston not seized is it?Bore going rusty? It will smoke like a ******* when it starts,....IF it starts. On old Brit knackers,it was often recommended to pour a small amount of oil down the plug hole when you put the bike into storage BEFORE winter.
I dont think you have owt to worry about,...just warm the bike up and ride it.:yes

Thanks for that Keith, in the end, thats what I did.
I did think that pulling the plug leads off may cause issues (£££) with the ignition.
It started first touch of the button.
Some older bikes can be spun over with the kill switch off, but this does not work.
I was thinking about the oil seeping out from bearing faces, big ends etc after a long lay up.
Much better to get the oil circulating a bit to help prevent bearing pick-up when it fires up.
I have read some horror stories about these engines when they go wrong.

horror storie....exactly that.A neglected engine will always need attention, but by the sounds of it you look after her.
nowt to worry ur pretty little head about

Olaf min...soonds like ye answered yer ain question in yer initial post...."but it fired up first touch" Wiz that before or after ye got tae thinkin aboot squirtin oil doon holes...

As long as ye jist switched her oan, let the needle sweep then held starter button intil she wiz runnin and didnae rev her at all she,ll will be awright.

I thought about it before I pressed the starter button.
After reading about other peoples problems, as a minimum I was expecting it to spin over a few times before bursting into life.
I was not expecting it to start as soon as the button was pressed.
I wish it started that fast in the summer.
It obviously thrives on neglect.

I thought I gave it a good clean down before putting it away for the winter, but when I uncovered it, all the bits of dead bugs that I had left in the nooks & crannies had gone mouldy & were covered in fur.
I dont think I have seen that on other bikes.
Maybe fungal growth likes Itallian bikes.
