Few Newbie Questions!!

Hi all,

Picked up my 2008 Tuono Factory a few days ago and just got a few questions for the knowledgeable ones out there! Have had a search through the forum, but can't quite get the answers i'm after.

Anyway:

Can the display show a fuel guage, or countdown to when you'll run out. All i can seem to find is a fuel light and that tells you when your down to 4.5l of fuel (sh*te, if your in the middle of nowhere!) Or do we just go by mileage and hope you've reset the mileage on each fill up!

Changing the speedo from MPH to KPH. There seems to be a couple of methods i've seen on the net, one is just a button push and the other is a code (although seems to be a couple of codes) Which one is right for me.

Can you fit a gear indicator to these bikes. Seems as though there was a hoax that it could be through the display? - so how about an acumen or similar. Any wiring diagrams, installation guides or colour codes for this

Due for its second service. Had its first done at an aprilia dealer by previous owner, so i presume that tappets were done (guess there is no way of checking other than trust!) How much am i likely to have to shell out for a second service, its only done 2000 miles.
Just had a quote of £175 sounds steep as all it will need is oil and filter change?

Cheers, sorry for all the questions, may be a few more later!

hi lock, Can answer a few of those for ya.
Fuel gauge...nah, just a crappy inacurate light!, you do get used to it although some seem better than others, you should get around 120-130 miles per tank depending on use. :thumbup

Changing the speedo, i'm pretty sure its in the menu somewhere, could be wrong, do you have a manual? :dunno:dunno

gear indicator, nothing on the display and although you can get one from accumen I dont think its much cop, because the speedo sensor reads the bolt heads on the rear disc and because there are only 5 of them the magnetic pulses are pretty slow and this can cause problems with the gear indicator (sometimes slow to react, sometimes won't work at all) :rolleyes
A pity, cos I fancied one myself, but i think this is one of the few bikes where it doesn't work well.
Cant help you much with the servicing costs i'm afraid as i've only had one major one done at a dealer so far, and that was the works. i do know that the dealers pricing can vary a lot though, so might pay to phone around.
hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Staddsy.

Saw the fuel light come on the other day at 100miles. The display then started a trip of how far i'd been going on reserve. So guess your right 120-130 to a tank - bloody juicy these Tuono's around 35mpg, my CBR600RR was returning 55mpg!!

Speedo i haven't tried yet, but it seems there may be a service code you have to put in. It doesn't mention it in the owners manual though.

Acumen reckon that the gear indicator works well on the Tuono (but i guess they are selling it!) They say the only problem is that Aprilia tend to change colours of their wiring quite a lot, so its a pain for Acumen to specify the colour codes! Started to learn the Tuono really only needs 4 gears, so slowly getting used to knowing what gear i'm in.

Service, been quoted £180 at 2 places, so looks like thats the price. Will only get this service to keep the warrenty going for another year, will do it myself after that.

Ey up Lock,
I've just gone from Rsvr to Tuono and I suppose the faired v naked thing will effect mpg. No way does the T do the same as the Mille but she ite what a blast eh!
Baaaaarrrrrrppppp.

I have a 2009 Factory. To enter the diagnostic menu through the normal menu on the dash it asks for a code. This is factory set at 13432... This will show you error codes if you have faults and allow you to change map etc and is generally for dealers, unless you have the code ;-) There is also a user code which the original owner may have set to access certain functions in the normal settings menu. Im afraid you'll need to ask him what it is, if he ever entered it. I think there is a way you can reset this code but you need to have both keys handy though as it asks you to swap them half way through.

KMH to MPH is under the settings menu if i recall.

Ey up Trevallion,
I did as described:thumbupbut how do you actualy change the map?
Speak very very slowly as I is tic.

Sorry mate. I didnt make that very clear. Switching between the two modes is only possible with the AXONE or Navigator software as far as im aware, plugged into your ECU. Its just the code to get to Diagnostics menu is useful to check for engine management faults once the map change is done so you know everythings fine.

Ahhh I see. Very handy tho the info you gave tho. I've heard of crafty[thieving]dealers charging as much as 40 quid to change maps. They can do it in the time it takes a kettle to boil and the decent ones do it for free or a tenner. Its nice to know as much about our bikes as possible tho isn't it. :thumbup
