is it a sticking thermostat?
or knackered water pump drive? any diagnostic tips?
seems ok if you kep going at speed!! but overheats around town-fans come on at just keep it below 105!!!
at first thought the thermo stuck? higher speed-bearing in mind cold weather seems to do it officer (faster I go the more normal the temp!!)

any ideas folks
air bleed/rad?
how easy to check thermo/water pump

cheers

If normal riding temperature is around 75c then its ok. On a hot day and city riding around 100c its normal. It is a twin afterall :)

Does it heat up quickly? Am just wondering if the water pump has gone from your description? Don't know much about these bikes yet but am not too bad with engines overall.

hi-seems to warm up normal-on a top gear run/blast all ok-once into town temp rises really quickly 110/112-dodgy levels
also i note the coolant-does not appear to be coolant!-no colour to it probably tap water!

the bike went up to scarborough 200 mile round trip all ok a few months back but recent localruns have got me worried-going investigate and flush system
just wondering if there was a way to see if the "coolant" was circulating ie pump doing its stuff
worried i might blow motor/gasket if it runs too hot for too long-and all this before the sun comes out!

around 80 the fans come on
Might try and find out where the thermostst is and take it out!-bit like my old cortina in the student days!!

Give Fusebox/Griff a shout He's not far away in Tamworth & He is the MAN!!!,if water pump wasnt working it would heat up regardless ,but it could just be an air lock by the sounds of it

Is the bike loosing water when it over heats?
Doing a flush of the system might be a very good idea just in case there is a slight blockage in the water system/radiators. And get a decent anti-freeze so you know your self that it has been changed properly at the correct mixture which is usually about 50/50.

I'm with vince on this, he knows his onions when it comes to these italian stallions. Sounds as if you have an air lock there buddy. I'd refill with a 50/50 mix, bleed it and try it then. (check for wildlife in your rads too :biggrin)

If the water pump wouldnt work you would know :D

If it leaks you would also see the water in your garage.

I would recomend to change the coolant first, while doing this you will also check the system a bit. Use a dedicated coolant fluid.

But they are hot bikes in city trafic they do get to a boiling temperature, but when riding normaly it shouldnt be a problem.

Quick question to everyone then as i am too trying to learn about this bike. Do the fans on the radiator still work if there is air in the system? :dunno Only reason i ask is not all radiators do work when air is in the system.
Obviously it won't if there is lots of air as the thermostat won't get to temp to switch the fans on.

It depends where the air bubble is, but since the thermostat has one hose on top of it(if I remember now corectly) the air shouldnt stay there.

Rads do work, just the water flow is slower.

But aprilias have a "self bleeding" system which requires no air bleeding so probably this isnt the case. Except if there is a leak somewhere and air comes in there, but then you would see the water going out.

I had a watercooling system on my pc, so I had a few looks :D

Change the fluid first and then invesstigate more if you will have to.

thanks to dolenc midex vince and everyone else for the advice top forum top bike top guys
Falco flushed new coolant hoses tightened and the thaw has set in!! life is on the up
