Excessive fork dive - Showa

I just picked up a really clean 2000 Mille. I was trying to get it dialed in for some trackdays and I'm getting a ton of dive under braking. Spring preload and compression isn't helping much.
I'll guess the fork oil has never been checked and the level is probably low. I weigh about 210 - am I going to need new springs? Anyone have experience with increasing the oil level above the recommended setting?
Thanks!

Sounds like you'll need to re-spring from what you are saying . Unless the forks are leaking then the oil shouldn't be low more like it has lost it viscosity if so then a good time to check your spring rate while apart & give them a good check over & put back together with some Ohlins fork oil :devious

As far as I know stock spring in showas is preaty stiff I think ist 1.0kg that suits a rider around your weight.

So I would say oil problems, if compression isnt doing much than its defenetly it. Its not only the oil level, when it gets old it looses some of its propretis. And it effects the bike a lot.

Dolenc is correct, the oil level is what you adjust to give you the correct amount of unused fork travel below your zip tie, the deterioration of the oil is more than likely the problem

spring will be fine dude

sounds like they just need a service, then a few tweaks to the oil height once your up and running again

I had exactly the same problem and was told by an expert that I needed a re-valve which turned out to be ********, he just wanted the money ! I got the oil changed and replaced with 10w instead of 5w and increased the amount of oil in the forks by 5cc and they are absolutely brilliant, I only use mine for trackdays and am about the same weight as you. I now have plenty of adjustment left and was able to back off the spring pre-load and control the forks using the damping which is the proper way to do it. Dont waste good cash until you have tried this first.

Agreed - my Showas are brilliant on track so yours probably just need a service. Think Griff put 5w in mine. Best front end I've ever owned.

yeah, sort the oil, which is probably old, I only changed my oil and springs at 58k miles as it was diving/wallowing a bit at that time.
Ck

Mr Haskins I think you will find Oregan is a long way from Tamworth where Griff is based, and I dont think his road trips go quite that far, lol lol lol

Yeah good point, but it only cost me £25 to get em done and the mail cost would be more than that.

u never know, give him a call, he may fancy a holiday but i think he'll need more work than just servicing a set of forks:nana

Where's your spirit of adventure? The world's a small place, international travel's a doddle, DHL can get it there yesterday...

Assuming they don't dent it, lose it, or mistake it for a supergun:eek:
