Hello to all.

Its not long now till the Riders For Research track day ( 19 / 8 ) down at Snetterton. Seeing as I'm trekking right across the country for this and by the time I get there I'll be closer to Brussels than my own house, I thought it would be a good chance to break my "riding in Europe" duck. As well as breaking my "trackday" duck, although the former relies on the latter going without incident :eek .

So my rough plan is to get the ferry from Harwich to Hoek van Holland, an hour up the road to Amsterdam for a night to sample some culture, and then a week finding my way round to the train at Calais.

This is where I could do with some advice because I've got only a very rough Idea what route to take. I know the Netherlands aren't known for their exiting roads so after the first night I was thinking of cutting across into Germany then down to the Black Forest region then back up through France to Calais. But of course there is also Belgium and Luxembourg close by. And as for the route to and from the black forest goes I ain't got a clue what roads to take for a decent ride. I don't want to be on motorways all day, equally I don't want to be stuck in 30 limits either !

So if anyone could give me the benefit of their experience of riding in this sort of area. Or offer a different slant on a good route to take if you don't think much of the one I've roughed (very rough!) out then please go ahead.

All advice would be greatly appreciated folks. Both with ideas about what roads to take or anything else that's relevant to riding in Europe for the first time.

Thanks chaps, Richie

belguim and luxenberg are crap, hardly any decent roads at all,the black forest has fantastic roads, when in germany why not do a few laps of the ring when ur there, awesome exp.any roads near the french alps are amazing.a good tip is say ur hammering down the road at well over the limit and u pass a cop car in the opposite direction,if u think there turning to follow u,open the bike up and get the hell out of there as quick as u can,if u can take the next turn as long as the cops dont see u turning off,if they catch u the feckers will take the bike off u and fine u loads of money.other than that its all good fun.
another tip i done on my first trip abroad was to put a sticker on the dash in ur line of sight somewhere reminding u to KEEP ON THE RIGHT,its easy to forget when ur having fun.
make sure u have european break down and recovery, worth also to take out extra health/insurance,try go compare, roughly around £18 for a couple of weeks, covers all health, accidents and make sure u have the european health card[free online]
a good tip for roads abroad is look at the map,if there a river going in ur direction follow it,not a major river though

Spend some time on google maps for the route.. once there just check your map and change the route to suit you and the time you have. Black forest area is great, most roads are good for biking but trees hurt when you hit them so be careful. :crazy

Check out the individual countries to see what you need to carry with you, bulb kit, proof of ownership (V5, Log book) licence, E111 card.. things like that. (legal requirements)

Otherwise just the normal stuff, break down cover, health/accident/holiday cover, read the small print to make sure you’re covered for a 1000cc bike (Oh yes, you’d be surprised)

Credit card, condoms, phrase book, the locals will help but they like to see/hear you try to use their language.

Have fun, get pics, oh yes, camera :thumbup

when talking to any of the natives, just add an o onto every word,ie when ordering a beer, its "oneo beero pleaso"works every where

Hello mate, if you're going to the Black Forest try to take in the B500 from Baden Baden to (roughly) Freudenstadt. It's a fantastic road about 30 or so miles long, that starts off tight and twisty and ends up with l-o-n-g f-a-s-t s-w-e-e-p-e-r-s.

I've posted a You tube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z5SrZZ4VUg which is filmed coming the other way (from the Freudenstadt end, heading north) but this is only about half of it.

Otherwise most of the Black Forest is good, but I recommend you stay to the west of the A81/E41 autobahn. When you ride the autobahns, watch the speed limits (not all parts are deristricted), watch for left hand lanes that come to a fairly sudden end (merging into the centre lane) and watch out for some cars which are very rapid!

Good luck!:thumbup

Benzin blei frei = unleaded petrol.

I spent 20 minutes in Germany trying to get an English speaking German to confirm this was the right muck to go in my T.

Trip wise, I did a similar thing two years ago - overnight Newcastle to IJmuiden ferry.
Two day's on the DAM:ghostface, then wen't south through Germany over Alps to meet some Swiss friends near lake Geneva.
Went to Nurburgring but due to some selfish Porsche owners chucking oil all over I didn't have time to do a single lap.

As per other posts, do some research first - this place is ok http://www.bestbikingroads.com/

oh and from previous experience, european breakdown is definately worth it; although don't expect much to happen between 12:00 & 14:00 - if u call upon it.

OH, AND RIDE ON THE RIGHT - believe me, it's easy to forget, especially when there's little traffic and you're pulling out of a fuel station or similar. I probably sound like your mum, but before pulling away take a second to THINK!!!

Thanks for the advice chaps! Its not far off now so I need to pull my finger out and get a bit organised. That vid of the B500 looks great. And I love the comment about German for unleaded! Thats exactly the sort of thing that would trip me up.

Is there any worthwhile roads coming back up through the top half of France that I should try aiming for ?

Cheers guys :thumbup
