The rating refers to the temp range at which the oil will maintain a working viscosity.

for example a 15/50 in theory has a working viscosity of 15 weight when cold and 50 when hot. They call them multi vis oils and they will actually change structure with temp to maintain their viscosity.

A W in the spec means it's suitable for winter use.

In general go for the oil with the narrowest operating range you think you will encounter.

the reason being that the additives they add to make the wide range oils work break down when hot and leave dirty deposits in your engine. some diesals can't use wide range oils for that reason as they burn more oil than petrol engines.

as a rough guide a 15w oil is good to -15 degrees and a 10w to -20 which i can't see many of you riding in if your sane.
