Engine dies, help would be appreciated?

Hi

I am a newbie to this forum and have just joined to see if I can find out a solution to my problem. I was travelling at about 55mph along a bypass with the engine warm. The bike had not been thrashed or was overly hot just a normal running temperature of 78C.

Was riding tonight and the engine died completely as if a wire had been pulled, the ignition was still on and power was still there but not even a kick of life after pulling over to the side of the road. There is plenty of fuel in the tank and wasn't even a splutter it was a total engine cot out.

Has anyone had any similar problems or has any ideas before I have to take the bike to the shop.

Thanks

Hello mate and welcome in.

A couple of questions to make it easier to diagnose the problem.
What year is your bike?
Doe's the engine still turn over on the starter?
Have you checked all fuses?

Cheers
Mark

Hi Tash

Engine still turns over and all the fuses are fine and been checked for faults with meter. The bike is an 03 plate

I have checked the resistance on the fall switch and it is what the manual says 62 upright and 0 tilted. Will be stripping of the rear section tomorrow to check for dodgy connections.

Hi Kiwi

I was wondering whether it might be the side stand switch, I will try that soon and let you know. It almost definitely is something as simple as that as the engine died instantly no splutters or backfires

Thought it was the side stand switch but tested it with ammeter and not. Now when trying to start it it will fire for a couple of strokes then nothing even on choke. Just wondering about fuel pump now.

I think it could be the fuel pump had the tank up tonight, no buzz from it, absolutely nothing. disconnected fuel line at carbs and nothing. checked three pin connector on right hand side under side panel and there is 12 volts getting to at least the plug.

Hi there for anyone following the thread, finally after many hours of thinking and a sore head I found the problem. I noticed that there was no priming noise coming from the fuel pump. I disconnected the fuel line to check in case it was a quiet pump, I raised the tank and tapped the bolts on the pump and tried it again. Still no noise from the pump priming the jets so I switched on the ignition and tapped the bolts again at the same time before the solenoid clicked off, shazzam! it worked, there was a whizzing and I tried the starter button, it started. thinking it was a one off I went for a short spin and it cut out but I knew this time how to rescue myself without having to call for any rescue truck.

Now does anyone have an idea how much a new pump will be? I know how much they are on ebay second hand or is there any pattern part out there? has anyone heard of any other pump that will fit without any major engineering? I've seen some pumps for sale around £400 or am I totally wrong or seeing things.

Thanks Colin
