Electrical problems

Hi. I bought my RSV Factory (04) last summer and have loved every minute of riding it. Havent done much of late though but keep the bike in my garage (heated) and on an Optimate charger.
I have started it up quite regularly but when I tried the other day, lights came on as usual, pressed starter and there was a clunk from beneath the saddle and then nothing....

Checked battery - showing 13.6v. Fuses ok. Just fiddling around I noticed that when the key is turned on and off, the panel lights up briefly. Left on, the sidelight glows dimly and there is a clicking noise from the light relay.

I did try jumping it and the headlights came on but still wouldn't start on button. Tried shorting across solenoid and she did turn over but sluggishly.

If any of you good people out there have any similar experiences or advice, I would be grateful. Yes, I know that there are many inherent problems with these little beauties, but the smile that this bike gives me when its working more than makes up for the problems of ownership.

The symptoms you describe point to a knackered battery. It may well show 13.6v off load, but be incapable of sustaining the high CCA required to crank a high compression V-twin . . . Recommendation - buy a Motobatt . . .

Ok, success - A new battery has done the trick!
I have to say that I was sceptical that the battery was the problem, but am now somewhat wiser. For anyone who has similar problems, these were the symptoms.
Slaving it off my car made the headlights work, but no joy on the starter - nothing at all. Shorting across solenoid terminals did turn engine, but sluggishly (Whilst being slaved).
Battery was reading 12.6v
Fiddling with the key ( turning on and off) made the dash light up briefly.

Anyway, a new battery was the requirement -It seems that poor amperage causes all sorts of problems with the ECU and this may well have caused the odd symptoms. So, if anyone else gets a similar problem, there you go.

All I need now is some dry roads and sunshine.

Told ya! PS. 'Taint 'poor amperage' that causes problems . . .it's the voltage dropping to fcuk all whilst you're trying to crank the motor . . .

I had simillar issue before with my 04' RSV, what i did was that, I chucked out the electrical cables to the head lights and gave it a crank.. and it started, with that I assumed that more CCA was able to be delivered to start the engine.

Once started, I run around highways without plugging the headlights back (to charge the battery). worked well after that. :)

Fine, but you are simply masking the symptoms, not curing the problem . . . !
