hi
got a yr 2000 rsvr on which the efi / service warning comes up on the dash.
is it a case of RTD (return to dealer), RTFM (refer to f*** manual) or is there some sort of test or check to find out why its on?
cheers in advance folks

Take the riders seat off and look for 2 wires with bullet connectors which you can put together, they have green wires and are usually on the right hand side (as you're sat on the bike). Put them together (push fit) and then turn on the ignition, but don't start the engine. You will get a fault code on the dash.

Here's a list of the fault codes and what they mean: http://www.apriliaforum.com/techtips/1000/faultcodes.htm.

Let us know how you get on.

ok.
took seat off. tipover sensor was unplugged.
did diagnostic, came up with tipover sensor fault code obviously!
plugged tos back in
did diagnostic, just comes up with 0

tested battery voltage
12.3 when not running
13.6@ 4k revs
12.5 @ 4k revs with lights on full beam

have put the battery on charge to see if its holding or not.

any input anyone?

Well that would be the fault then! :D . Does it start fine now?

Showing 0 is good, it means your throttle position sensor is likely to be in the correct place (there's more to it than that, but 0 is usually good).

Battery sounds "ok", these bikes do like a healthy battery though, so keep it topped up for starting. Think mine shows a bit higher voltage than that but I have an uprated one and it's only a few months old. Did you test the battery with a multimeter or using the dash function? (Press D once with ignition on). The dashboard does tend to be less accurate.

started fine before. still showing efi warning though.
its a bit lazy turning over but i guess thats just the starter solenoid, will be fitting an uprated one when i get around to it.

If it's still showing the warning then you must still have a problem somewhere! Tried getting another code?

These bikes are renown for being hard to start. I always use the cold start lever even when it's warm (then turn it down very quickly) as it guarantees it starts pretty quickly every time. If you crank it over for too long without it starting you can wear out and eventually damage the sprag clutch which is an expensive job to fix!

As far as I'm aware... starter solenoids either work or they don't, there's no in-between. The stock one is known to stop working completely quite often, but it will not degrade, a solenoid is either open or closed. Mine is replaced just to stop it leaving me stranded in the future!
