Dripping petrol any ideas anyone?

Basically went to look at my beloved in the shed this morning after spending yesterday spinning around in the sun (ain't it great sun finally yippeee) only to find a pool of petrol coming from one of the i can only guess at overflow pipes - its not the tank overflow pipe i checked that, could it have something to do with after spending yesterday riding around fairly hard about 15 miles from home i topped up the fuel (super unleaded) got home and parked it and washed it down put it away in the shed!! ie filling it up whilst engine still hot etc then stopping suddenly!! I started it up this morning and it did seem to stop whilst running but now its dripping again - Have i busted summit :exclamation:dunno:confused
 
I had a little thought but not sure if this would be the case with the RSV but if your tank breather is blocked then pressure will build up inside the tank and might cause it to come out of the overflow? This happens on my race bike as its a sealed Alloy tank with a breather hole with one way valve that doesn't work very well.

This might be well off as I guess the overflow pip in the tank would also act as a breather.... Hmmm..
 
How big a pool?

steady drip, thought it might have been sloppy fillup but its still going prob about a 2/3 tablespoon since sunday night and still going - had heads up it might be the pipes come away from the attachments inside and the darned thing is full of petrol :-(
 
two problems i've encountered was the quick release pipe 'o' ring needed replacing and the main braided hose getting trapped and rubbing away under the tank(common fault) but if it is coming out the breather it is normally fuel that has bin sitting around the cap when filling or breather blocked like mark said overpressurizing and going out the overflow:thumbup is it coming out of the breather?or running alongside
 
Its coming out from the breather pipe at the bottom.

Rode around today in the sunshine like you do :) and it seemed to ease off when i stopped after doing 50 miles or so then when i got home after about 105 miles it wasn't doing it - looked in tank with torch couldn't see much but its still drip free - now the question is do i take it apart and look or leave it, fill it up and see if its doing it next time???
 
There's a drain pipe from around the cap area, so that rain / water / petrol spillage has somewhere to go.

If that pipe has cracked inside the tank, then it will leak fuel when the level is higher than the crack or break. (And any rain / water etc can get into the tank.)

I don't know if that is the problem or not, but it happened to plenty of TL tanks.
 
Is it drippin from the right or left side....I know stupid question.
 
There is a quick connect on the fuel line that runs along the left side at least my bike has it. I have had that connector come loose over time and starts as a leak then came apart and spewed fuel all over my leg. That was real nice. I would start there.


as you sit on the bike its dripping from left side
 
Did you manage to sort the tank leak problem? I have a similar problem and I can't seem to sort it. Any help will be appreciated.
 
i went out today on mine, filled up with juice set off then i felt summat on my right leg. stopped rubbed my leg and it was fuel checked round the bike no leaks, it must of come from somewhere :angry
 
Thanks for the thread, however mine seems to be leaking from around one corner of where the pump pump bolts to the tank. Mine is also the plastic tank but the breather/overflow bits look OK. What was this problem of warping tanks? Any advice on a sealant gasket suitable for petrol? Any help appreciated ta. G.
 
erm maybe a little late here but the old mille R's were renowned for having problems with perished petrol pipes. i would check them all just to be on the safe side.
 
Yes there is quite a bit written about the plastic tanks warping and distorting the seal around the pump so that it leaks !!!.

I think the fix was a new gasket with some additional sealant :dunno

Sorry to possibly be the bearer of bad news, but I've just had a similar problem with my mille.
on mine, its the base of the tank where the fuel pump/filter bolt on which has warped and as a result, the 'o' ring seal on the mounting plate isn't making full contact with the tank base, and fuel is leaking out.
I haven't managed to come up with a solution just yet, but have several ideas which I'm working on.
Hope its not the same fault with yours, but if you think it may be, after taking off the tank, turn it upside down and look at the joint between the mounting plate and the tank, the gap is easy to spot on mine, and isn't just in one place.
