Dreaded brown connectors

S

SPOOKY

Fellas, went out for a good blast yesterday only to notice the smell of melting plastic. Got home ok and ripped the bike apart and found the dreaded melted brown connectors. My question is what are you dudes using to do the soldering, I've got a 100w Weller iron which hasn't been a problem in the past but on these wires it's doing bugger all. To put the top hat on the day I found brake fluid pissing out of the outside face of the MPL slave cylinder. Oh joy

I was lucky enuff that my missus bought me a 300w industrial soldering iron for crimbo last year as everytime i went to repair something, my little 100w wasn't up to it.:nana

I also have a little gas powered soldering iron that runs off lighter gas which was only a couple of quid off ebay, and is great for doing jobs where getting mains power is tricky, and this would do what your after.:biggrin

As for the brake fluid leak, i dont know as not had leaks from mine yet,so havn't investigated this art of the bike yet:dunno

I just used my Snap On gas powered soldering iron, did the job a treat.

Sorry to hear your MPL is leaking, is it the unit or just the banjo come loose?

Same as Amb67, i have a snap-on gas soldering iron, and i replaced my wires with thicker ones from Halfords and ran them around the top of the rad in some plastic tubing, instead of them sitting in the 'V' of the motor.

I had to replace about 6 inches or so of the alternator wires (where the brown connector is) due to them being unsolderable (the quality of the cables is cack on some parts of the loom and really good on others).
What I did was get some crimp connectors that have an adhesive coated heat shrinkable sleeve, then cut back the cack part of the loom in a staggered order (so that they ar'nt too bulky or can rub on each other) crimp (with a proper crimp tool, not pliers), heat and seal.
These connectors are water proof and vibration resistant.
(Also if replacing parts of the loom match the cable spec please)

Looks like I'll have to get me a gas soldering gizzmo then.

amb67, The leak seems to coming from the face of the cylinder see piccy.

I would imagine there's a seal at the back of the cover with recess holes drilled in it, for a tool to undo it. Had a word with MPL today and they have asked for it to be sent back to them, so hopefully it'll get sorted soon.

This stock resort of "send it back to us" annoys me. How about "we'll send you a replacement and a reply paid jiffy bag for you to send the duff one back in" so you're bike isn't off the road?????
I bet you won't get the cost of postage, your time or the jiffy bag off them either.
