Simple question is why are there so many types advertised and is there really any difference? I'm not a racer I just use the bike for weekend scratching.
So is cheap really poor quality or is the expensive just a marketing gimmic?

Yeah bud. You need at least DOT 4 or 5 but not DOT 5.1 cus if I remember right that one is silicone based. Its all about how much moisture a lower DOT will absorb and how that effects the seals etc. For the sake of a couple of extra quid get the best.

Cheers. I started just looking for dot 4 but there was loads of variants and couldn't understand why. I've heard about the silicon based stuff on here so know to stay away from it. But what's the difference in dot4's?

Hi Bro,

This should clarify alot of your doubts: Brake fluid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DOT 5.1 explained: DOT 5.1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I personally use Bosch DOT 5.1 SUPER for my car and for my Cagiva's. Braking has been awesome and no problem so far.

Careful  Dot 5 is silicone & cannot be added to DOT 3, 4 or 5.1

Basically
DOT 3 now old spec
DOT 4 for most people the best stuff to use
DOT 5 silicone, good fluid if used on a braking system with no traces of mineral oil as it will not mix with DOT 3,4 or 5.1
DOT 5.1 has a higher boiling point than DOT4 so better for racing but absorbs moisture faster than DOT 4 so will require more frequent changes

HTH

Great advice thanks to all.
If you look at just Dot4 then, the price ranges from £7 to £50. Surely Dot4 is Dot4?

****** if I know :dunno I been using Halfords DOT 4 for years & never had any problems, my brakes have always been excellent. BTW just buy enough to do the job as you don't want it sitting around for years unsealed absorbing moisture
