Finished work tonight and noticed it been raining. the bike is caked in crap from the weeks travels. good cleaning day tomorrow.
Started the bike up and put the choke on to warm the poor girl up as shes been sat in the rain and dirt all day and then noticed my speedo going from 0 to 30mph.:thumbup to be honest I just pissed my self.

Im hoping its just crap and water on the speedo sensor but knowing my luck its all buggered.

once the bike was warm it was reading 0. rode how about 30 miles and switched off. had a coffee, went in the garage and switch her back on and still reading 0.

any thoughts?

The wire is prone to splitting near the sensor and letting in water. Mine has done it before but it took out a fuse after a while as well.

Not sure where your bikes kept but mine lives outside, all be it nicely covered, and I had something sort of similar. I took the cover off in preparation for a ride and noticed alot of condensation on the inside of the speedo, to the point that I couldn't see anything it was saying but I presumed it would clear as I rode which it eventually did.

However I was giving it a bit of stick and the speedo got to a particular speed (won't say what) and it just stuck on that despite the fact that I kept accelerating. Anyway when I got to the petrol station I checked the vmax speed setting and it said 155mph which I 100% did not do, not even close. I left it for the trip home wondering if another good burn might make it get it's act together but when I got back to my place I checked it again and it said 188mph!!! Kind of cool I guess but SOOO not right as not only would I never do that on a public road (officer), and presuming the speedo's remotely acccurate I don't think it can!

Anyway I'm putting it down to moisture in the speedo/electrics as it once again has a frosty speedo and is telling me I've done 188mph regardless of the fact I zero'd it after I last rode it 2 weeks ago and it hasn't been touched since then. I'm not too worried at the moment as everything else seems to be working although I'm planning to pop out on it today so I'll keep an eye on it I think.

NOrmally when im at home its kept in the garage, not the best garage but its clean and dry. well sort of clean :)
During the week its abused and left outside of work. Weather is pants at the moment with frost and rain so I guess the problem is with the sensor and water getting in. im going to strip and clean it this weekend and see if it makes any difference. my clocks all seem fine, no mist etc and nothing else is reading funny.
The speedo was doing its trick again this morning, but once it was warm and I was rolling It sorted its self out.

Thought I would update you guys on the magic speedo!
I noticed tonight I was doing 95 :) and an old man in a electric buddy over took me. Yes I was sat in a car park with the motor running :)

Decided to pull it apart tonight as its getting worse. the rear sensor was covered in only what I can call iron fillings. im guessing and hoping its crap from the rear pad.

Gave it a damn good clean and start the bike back up. all seems to good not. Ride to work tomorrow will tell me if its sorted or not.

fingers crossed :)

And our survey said............

Iron filings from rear pads on a mille, your having a laugh :biggrin

I dont know what it is. its just like iron fillings. Anyways. didnt resolve the issue anyway. At in traffic this morning and the speedo hit 124mph. No bad hey!

Come on guys, give me some ideas. someone on here must of had this on the mille at some point?

Have you replaced the pickup matey? These units do have a cyclic life..its counted lots of bolt heads and switched constantly..git yerself a newy.

The sensor being the cable by the rear caliper right?

I haven't replaced anything yet as not sure what to replace :)
Any good places to get one from?

Yeah hes got one for £38 dilivered. With christmas, Might just disconnect it and goet one after.
Fingers crossed its that bit :)

:devious good morning garvey. it would be the sensor.this might sound crazy but take some brake cleaner in a can and spray it.then make sure it is really dry then use electric cleaner and use that then use some rtv silicone and put it around where the wires come in to the sensor and that will help keep any water and yuk from getting in.and if that dont work time for a new sensor.take care donnie:doug
