anyone have any advice on how much freeplay there should be on the linkage bearings?

I could lift my swingarm up and down about 5mm at the wheel spindle and feel movment at the lingages with fingertips. so i thought the bearings might be knackered. taken it apart and everthing looks like new is smooth and still well greased and after trying a new pin in a new bearing i think there will still be the same play if i put the new ones in.

Nothing like when i did my old cr500 when i had to hammer the seized pins out!

Do i put in the new ones as i have bought them or save them for next year?

Are you sure the bolts were tight when you checked it, there shouldnt be any play :dunno

all tight. noticed the play last year but only got round to looking at it.

So if yours is on a abba type stand do you have no vertical play holding the wheel or swingarm ends?

Nope, get someone to move the arm up & down for you so you can see where the movement is :thumbup

Definitely shouldn't be 5mm. There will be a slight amount but practically unmeasurable say 1mm maximum at the swing arm. Have you checked the play at the shock bushings too?

I can feel the play on both ends of the dog bone and on swingarm so will just change the lot then.

cant feel any plat on shock bushes but if there is still to much movment after i will change them.

Thanks for the help.

if the play is at the dogbone/frame interface at the rear of the engine then there is always play there by design. It's not always the bearings, it's the bolt moving inside the solid spacer. The Ally flexes and Mass produced swingers etc are not acurately enough built to lock everything up with no play because you would get alignment issues which would stress the ally and bearings.

You need to get someone to lift the wheel whilst you feel at each pivot and you will detect which bit has the play with your fingers. 5mm at the wheel is probably only 1mm at the linkage if that.

all dismantled now. Bearings are in the freezer ready to go

While i was lifitng the wheel i could feel under 1mm of play on all three points so added up and multipled by swingarm length suppose thats 5mm.

Also had a thought that does the small amount of tolerance tighten up as the bearings and pins heat up and expand as i have only ever checked when everthing is cold?

Finally changed all the bearings and the excessive play as gone, There is still some movement but no deffinite clunk.

Was supprised to see how much side clearance there is in the linkage and have seen others have used a spacer.

Has anyone any feedback on them?

Would it not be possibly to use o rings both sides to stop them rubbing and to keep out more dirt or would that be far too tight?

A.......little in a lot of things adds up to a lot as you have found out LOL................keep em serviced/greased up........ yearly m8 if regularly used and you won't get worn bearings like that accumulating play!!
