Dilemma......To Track or Not To Track

hi everyone,

my lovely wife who enabled me to get my amazing rsv4 factory (by part exing her 675 )has put me into a right dilemma.

to cut it short she had offered to help me turn my rsv4 into a track bike but i have to choose road or track. so my bike either stays being used on the road and paying insurance, road tax etc.... or to use that money each year to do about 5 track days a year.

Now i really enjoyed taking my old R1 on the track definitly the beast fun you can have with your clothes on and being able to use the bike as it always has wanted to be used. and with what i pay a year to be on the road it would be about 5 track days a year. Now i cant decide once i have done these days that will be all my riding done for the year and will it be enough, i dont do the miles i used to a year due to my son being a time vacuum. But i do enjoy riding on the road being able to pop out on my bike to shows and races but whenever i have a spirited ride i alwaysfeel i should be going faster which i know is not a healthy mind set. i mean im no hero but i like going what i consider quickly.

So i was wondering what the people out there think and if anyone has had the same dilemma and what they did and did they regret it at all????

Also if i did track it any advice on essential mods?

Cheers for reading and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Marc

hmmmm tough call! its a shame you have to choose, i use my rsv2 for both, this year its been mainly track use but i keep it on the road just in case as it only costs £200 a year to insure...! mirrors, indicators and plate all come off relatively easily for track use in case of the worst, and scrubbed racetec k1/k2s do fine both road and track....but a v4 is a different kettle of fish i suppose....!! have fun whatever you choose!

ps as a side note i reckon a road bike would hold its value better though...?

I feel that dilemma as well, but every time I go out on the roads I end up wondering about getting a NIP in the next few days, not a very satisfying way to end the day.

Track is definitely addictive but only 5 a year? couldn't manage on that.

I guess as I have two 2003 bikes it's not the same as having a new V4 and I wouldn't contemplate tracking a newish bike,a mate of mine got the urge and took his mint Lt edition 1098S Tricolore for a day out at Anglesey last year and got quicker and quicker during the day until the last session. You know, the one where the more experienced guys are supposed to advise about being tired etc and slowing down? Well he didn't and lowsided doing about £2500 worth of damage to a collectors bike.

Get a cheapo track bike!

also forgot to mention if you are tracking dont forget to factor in the cost of a van/trailer! its a slippery slope from there, tyre warmers, awnings, caravans....how far you go all depends on you!

hi there
cheers for your quick response, yeah we already have the van and caravan....... i was also thinking once the track days are done whether it would be enough but thats all part of the dilemma. with the resale value my wife has already told me this is it and i wont be getting a new one (impeding mortgage......)so..... and it seems that the major parts of the bike seem to be reasonably priced except the engine.
Its a bloody tricky one....

unfortunately it has to beone or the other. i thought of the day time mot route. yeah my wife wont let me take it on the track unless its wearing different clothes

I have considered this also and decided to keep it on the road fr lots of reasons !!

Like has been Said 5 track days wouldnt be enough time on the bike for me!

I do more sundays out with the lads for breakie or evening rides for chips !

I know if I went track only if be gutted when i couldnt pop out for quick ride when nice !

I'd also say an rsv4 is slot of money to track unless I got money in reserve !! If u come off that's alot of cash to fix !!

You would be better of selling and getting 2 rsv's ! One for track one for road and still have spare cash !

Track days aren't cheap ... If I took into account my insurance tax mot Thats about 600 per year !

That would fund paying for about 5 track days but then petrol transport food etc u got to put another 100 for each day !

I'd say u need to be budgeting 200 per track day maybe more if u want to do brands or silverstone gp circuits !

So i decided to stay on the road and get out when pos and then if flush or birthdays etc go on 2 or 3 track days if I can! If not o well il run out through the lanes to Brighton for an Ice cream !!

Birthday = track day then il fund extras

Then il save up a little for second and 3rd if I get any overtime at work !!

But looking at your situation I am guessing you would cry about the repair bill of an rsv4 when it hits the gravel and flips !!

15k if frame bent etc....

Ordered an RSV4F SE APRC should arrive early Dec 2010, can't wait. Like my last bike the RSV4R I will use it 50% Road and 50% Track covered 5400 miles on my old RSV4R snice March 2010. In my opinion you buy bikes like these to use to get maximum pleasure from their ownership, you only live once. I will be using my new RSV4F SE APRC in the same way as my last bike, the only difference this time will be that I am removing 90% of the panels from my new bike and fitting the Al Italia body kit from Austinracing (Rich). I will also be replacing the Exhaust and Screen, I intend to keep the original parts as new, stored up in the loft. When I am on a track day I try to ride within my limits and not the bikes, (so far so good), my biggest fear is being hit from the rear and shunted off. That said I love going on track days, done about 20 now, just keep my fingers crossed all goes well but if **** happens then so be it. If you think about what can go wrong too much you would not do anything in life.

Can't help sending this note my new RSV4F SE APRC has just arrived, which is about a week earlier than I expected, feeling brilliant right now, will check it out soon at the dealers.

A good track day is so much better on the RSV4. Its just a shame to only ride it on the road.
