I contacted Acumen and they were very helpful and said the problem lay with the wiring from aprilia. I sent them the pages from the manual and basically he started to laugh as Aprilia have cocked it up and the wiring is bollocks, see below:

Thanks, but it's the wiring diagram that makes no sense. Look at page 116,
Item 15 which is the rear light. Then look at page 117 - the 'key' - at item
15 - it says it's a spark plug! 14, which is a rear indicator bulb, shows as
a spark plug, and 16, also a rear indicator, shows it as a coil. One of the
funniest ones is Item 42 on page 116, it's even marked as THROTTLE, yet on
the key shows as a Clutch Switch.
I just daren't trust anything on this wiring diagram which is why we have
never done a listing for it.
I'll try Aprilia again, but we've had no luck so far! Sorry for the bad
news.
