Diesel powered?!?!

Hi all,

I'm posting this cos I've found I usually get good advice on here:

A guy I work with came in on Monday telling me how he put diesel in his Kawasaki 636 by mistake - yes, I'm still pissing myself aswell!!!
He managed to pump it out and then refill with unleaded, and rode it back 90-odd miles and thought it would be ok. He went to start it today but no good, so we've just finished draining the tank and putting more petrol in it but it still won't go.
He's getting twitchy as he needs to ride it 180 miles home on Friday, and we've got no ideas what to do next.

Anyone go any ideas, or is it going to be a Fuel Doctor job?

Are they injection or carbs?
If the later then drain the carb bowls! if FI then I guess the diesel might have eaten some seals in the fuel system??

Diesel won't do any harm......but a petrol motor will struggle to fire up on it.
AFIK diesel doesn't contain any solvents which are harmful to fuel lines.
Agree with gregorius, make sure the fuel lines are properly clean of the diesel.
Also, there's a fair chance the plugs are fouled/oiled up...pull one out to check.
Also (pt II) remember that diesel has a higher SG than petrol, so will settle to the bottom of the carb float bowls, with the petrol settling on the top of it. Given that the fuel is drawn from the bottom of the chamber it will be pulling the residual diesel through before the petrol..., it might be that you need to flush it through.

Cheers for the replies.
It's injected, so no float bowls to worry about. How do we flush the fuel lines out, could we maybe push some redex or easy-start through it?

if you can take the fuel lines off and run thru in a bowl of petrol sep from bike but do it in order as you dont want them fouling again !

Hold my hands up here.
5 or 6 years back I filled my 1050 Triumph Sprint with diesel, from empty right to the top. didn't realise till the bike stopped a few hundred yards down the road.
Don't know how it happened as i didn't have a diesel car so it wasn't normal to pick up the black pump.
Had to get the RAC out to get the bike home, then drained the tank. went and bought a gallon of super unleaded put half in the tank, then with the plugs out, spun the bike over for a good bit to try on clear the fuel injection system. Drained the tank again to clear out any diesel returned to the tank.
Plugs back in and put the second half of super unleaded into the tank and cranked it over.
A real pig to start and when it did it wouldn't run right for a good while. Lots of lumpinese and browny white smoke which took ages to clear.
Then took it to the garage and brimmed it and went for a good long ride.
Apart from feeling a total pratt and spending hours in the garage getting it sorted, no harm done.

Cheers for all the help. We got it going - redex in the tank and syringes into the fuel pipes, let it sit for a few hours, plugs out and good clean and it started after a couple of turns. He's happy, pretty sure it won't be happening again!!

Yeah you tend to make this mistake only once ,done it in the work van about 10 years ago ,got 1/2 mile up a hill and it conked out and caused chaos for 3 hours:jack till I got recovered .

Yeah Redrat we've all done it - I put unleaded in my van the other week. Luckily it was about 7-quid's worth and then topped up with 100-quid of diesel, gave it a good shake and it was absolutely fine. Still felt a *** though, wasn't my finest hour!!!

ha ha ..i've been off the road a few years now but for consistent offenders apparently the company now pass on the cost of the work to the driver...as its down as gross misconduct
