Hello all,

I wonder who would have any advice, my bike was running perfectly fine then one day the battery died whilst out and used a jump pack to try start it and the starter solenoid started smoking so gave it up and got it recovered back home and thought ahh put the battery on charge and start again but with a fully charged battery back in all I was getting was a click from the solenoid so replaced it and still nothing so put it in diag and the error codes come up as 11 and 12 which is no signal from cam and crank sensor but if I bridge the solenoid it starts and runs perfectly with no issue, I’ve checked all fuses and relays and everything is working as it should but still won’t go on the button just a click and it’s driving me insane, has this kinda thing happened to anyone else as I don’t want to start buying things left and right or spend hundreds putting it in a garage just for a diag.. fyi it’s a gen 1 Mille

Hi Natwardy9,
I have a Shiver, so have a pretty good insight into Italian electrics. I'm also a mechanic, so do have the technical background also.
You say the battery died whilst out. Did it die whilst you were riding or did you stop then it wouldn't start? If it was after you stopped the engine & you hadnt done something like leaving the lights on for a while, then this could suggest a dodgy battery that no longer holds a charge, or worse, the regulator rectifier has packed up. If the battery is more that three years old, replace it anyway. If it has gone dead flat over the winter more than a couple of times, again, replace it.
Get the bike started using your terminal bridging method, then using a voltmeter, check the voltage across the battery terminals. Should read around 13.6 to 14.2 volts, or thereabouts. If its too much above or below, that would initially suggest the regulator rectifier has died. It could also be the generator, but testing that is a more complicated process best carried out by someone who knows what they are doing. If you need a reg/rectifier, don't buy a cheap one from ebay, as they rarely work properly, if at all. Go original or there is a company called MTX make a very good quality unit at a reasonable price.
The fact that the engine cranks when you bridge the solenoid terminals suggest a knackered solenoid. You don't say whether you bought a new or used solenoid. You can check the solenoid by using your voltmeter. The black lead of your voltmeter to chassis (earth) & the read lead onto the large terminal on the solenoid that goes to the starter (not the battery side). Now turn the ignition key to the start/cranking position. You should see in excess of 12 volts during cranking, if not, solenoid is kaput.
Concerning the sensor faults, the bike starts, so I would guess that these may just be down to the fact that the power has been disconnected & youve been messing around with the electrics a bit. Could also be historic after a previous fault & never cleared down. I wouldnt worry about them too much at this stage. If you have the kit, just clear them once you've done the other work, but I have a feeling they won't come back. You can buy a generic OBD code reader but would also need the 3 pin adapter to match it to your bike. You can also download a few different apps to your phone & with the adapter plugged into the USB socket of your phone, do the same thing. Guzzidiag is fairly good on the Aprilias, but there are others that may be better.
Hope this helps,

Oh, forgot to add.
To check the battery without a 'drop' tester. If you have a smart charger (Optimate, Oximiser, etc) all the better, if not, use a normal charger on the lowest setting available & let it charge for two or three days. Once done, leave it for a day then check the voltage across the terminals. Should be at least 12.2 volts. Any lower then its possibly had it. If the voltage seems ok, you can put a load across the terminals (e.g. headlight bulb) for 10 minutes, disconnect & then check the voltage & its below 11.5v, it's a pretty sure sign it's gone.
